The NYT has an article on artisinal soap makers. The craft has been established for more than a thousand years, using olive oil, alkali, and salts. Although many of the older firms have passed on, the craft is still in full swing.
Green savon de Marseille is made from olive oil, and white or beige soap is made from palm oil.
Other lines include the earthy Ligne Terra, based on clay and organized around three "families" of scents: Yellow (honey), Green (lavender and verbena) and Red (honeysuckle and lime). The Ligne Bleue contains bath foam, shower gel, body milk and lotion; the scents are predominantly lavender, marine algae, cinnamon-mandarin and jasmine.
