This is a culinary wasteland, unless one is talking about restaurants at the level of Gari and Cafe Boulud pricing or above. There is no good food, and one is better off buying a tin of foie gras and eating it with a dessert wine in one's own home, than to venture out to restaurants if one is limited to UES restaurants.
So the UES is an especially bad situation within a generally bad situation of NYC.
Even my own marginally increasing, but still very poor, culinary capabilities exceed those of many restaurants on the UES, as far as I can tell, that are below Gari or Cafe Boulud pricing. Conditions like those that exist on the UES can drive a person to learn to cook.

What about Wu Liang Ye? I sorta kinda like it. I haven't been to Shanghai Pavillion but it's on my list. And I have friends who swear by that Henry's Evergreen or whatever it's called now....

I kinda know Henry and have been on his wine mailing list for a long time. He was the maitre d' at Chiam years back and thats a place we frequented. Anyway, Henry's isn't as good as Shanghai Pavillion, IMHO.What about Wu Liang Ye? I sorta kinda like it. I haven't been to Shanghai Pavillion but it's on my list.
