And come down sometime, we'll go there on the way to lunch at Carnitas Aeropuerto in Zamora, another hour or so down the road.

I have to! Before we move back to Europe. I'm hoping next summer or the summer after that. I want to go during the summer so that I can also hook up with my local L.A. (Mexican) friends who go at that time of year.

Thanks for the response, Cristina.

there are few Mexicans, whether in Mexico or in the USA, who still make their own tortillas on a daily basis.

Actually, I made that point first. I held back a bit out of politeness.

You are a model of self control, girl!

It breaks my heart here to see so many Mexicans buy the crappy tortillas that come from Texas! I'm sure they are good in TX but we have many tortillerias (and lesbians) here.

The same people that offered me my own brand of masa harina also offered me tortillas with a 6 month shelf life. Yummy nummy woohoo!

Edited to say- PDX may be an interesting island, like Chicago, where some old traditions have stayed even though they've been diluted in Mexico.

It breaks my heart too! Unfortunately Mexicans in L.A. work for a living. Really long hours to keep the Californian economy going.

Agreed!

If it were a choice between hand made Mexican tortillas or Indian mangoes I might be a bit more ambivalent,

the truth is probably closer to the fact that if crap is available for cheap people will buy it. lots of working people in india make chapatis everyday. no one has yet thought to market chapatis to them, pre-packaged food being seen as more of a luxury item.

I don't know the current price of pre-packaged tortillas in the USA, or even the price of tortillas from the tortillerķas in LA and other places.

Friday I asked my maid to pick up a kilo and a half (about 3.3 lbs--a great big stack) of freshly made tortillas for the party that night, hot off the machinery, from the tortillerķa down the block from me. Total price was 8 pesos--at the going exchange rate, about $.70 US.

yes, i think the sadder thing about pre-packaged is that much better and cheaper pre-packaged tortillas are available to many americans in their own neighbourhoods than the ones they buy in supermarkets. i should know--i only very recently converted to getting my tortillas from local tortillerias. ah, the lure of one-stop shopping. not to mention the de facto segregation (by class and ethnicity) of the grocery shopping experience.

Instead of making homemade rotis I sometimes buy whole wheat tortillas.

The crap from Texas is often more expensive than the locally produced fresh ones! It's the one stop thing.
