Sorry, I been a bit too busy to think about this:

North side of 14th to south side of 34th - west side of 7th Avenue to the river.

Pete McManus is a good traditional pub. Chelsea Markets has a good wine store, and passable butchers. I am in two minds about the fishmonger. Oh, and there's that excellent Italian market too, and someone will remember the name. Bargain kitchen utensils and tableware in the back.

Okay, let me throw it open...

Best hot dogs: F&B
Best beer (store): that place on 23rd Street west of 10th Avenue
Best Mexican groceries: Kitchen Market
Best American baked goods: Fat Witch Brownies, Billy's

I think the Italian place in Chelsea Market is Buon Italia.

best burger: Chelsea Grill. Peter McManus not bad either
best specialty food shop: Kitchen Market
best wine bar: Bar Veloce
best tapas: Tia Pol
best cocktails: Red Cat, but hard sometimes to get a seat at the bar. Also, delicious appetizers available to soak up the cocktails
friendliest staff in a liquor store: Phillipe, which has a so-so selection of wines but will order cases of almost anything available if you ask nicely
best pizza: Global 33's margherita
best Chinese: Grand Sichuan
best oysters: Bongo. Plus, it's a fun bar
best small bistro with no pretensions: Le Singe Vert
The greengrocer in Chelsea Market is good, and has good prices

For fish and meat, I find myself making trips to the West Village for Citarella and and Jefferson Market

I recall a nice bar that had a great outdoor and walled bier garden. Bar food. On 10th Ave or thereabouts? I think it may have been a gaybar but I never really thought too much about it.

The Park? Not gay per se, just fashionable and fabulous. Or aspires to be. That could also be Bottino, which has much better food than The Park and a more colorful crowd.

best small bistro with no pretensions: Le Singe Vert

If by "no pretensions" you mean "best place to get a salade verte with whole roaches tossed in for an accoutrement" then by all means: Le Singe Vert

Visually I love The Park. I've never had any food there.

I have not been to El Cid in such a long time that I cannot offer a comparison. I went off El Cid for a while for a number of reasons.

I like Tia Pol, though.

I've had very nice (although thoroughly inauthentic, I'm sure) fish & chips at The Half King.
