After having heard about their reknowned aperitif parings, perhaps my expectations were too high. Cam had a ginger martini, which came with cherry brik that was billed as having foie inside. He says "it was basically a potsticker". I had a pear brandy sidecar, which came with a delicate crostino topped with a whisper of cheese. Nice nibbles, but the cocktails were way off-balance and sloppily made; we didn't finish them.
For starters, I had a salad that sounded impressive but is now totally forgotten... something like shaved fennel and watermelon-radish dressed in Casa Brina olive oil. It was pretty, but too subtle. Cam had the most enormous plate of sweetbreads, which he said were very good; they had a fried-caper and fried-herb garnish.
My entree was pork cheeks braised in milk, served with "silk handkerchief" pasta. The pasta was cute (sage leaves embedded in it) but it was more of a garnish than a side -- I got the sense they really wanted to push you to order the separate sides -- which we didn't, even though they sounded good, because we weren't super-hungry. The cheeks were good, but there was twice as much meat as I could eat. And they weren't really anything I couldn't make at home on a weeknight.
Cam's main was impressive in its size: A whole roasted branzino that could have fed three people, garnished with a scattering of lentils (which looked like roe... very clever). The fish was tasty, but not thrilling. It was, after all, just a nice roasted fish. I wish we had ordered the ala carte sides, but then we would have had 3 times as much food as we needed... if you're going to have offer three-course dinner (really 4, with dessert) and the mains don't really include a starch, then IMHO the portions should be sized appropriately for people to really order that way. They weren't.
The service was good, with a few exceptions: Our waitress seemed shocked at how big the fish was, but then she made us feel bad for not ordering dessert. I was also a tiny bit annoyed at how our server fawned over the people at the next table who ordered cocktails, foie gras courses (they each had their own), salad or soup, AND a main course. "Very well-ordered!" she complimented, which made me feel like a bumpkin for ordering only 2 courses.
Our corner booth was nice and comfortable; I liked that they had a banquette surrounding the room. And I loved that they had Kiehl's soap in the ladies' room.
So overall, I was unimpressed. But, if someone said "hey, let's go to Cafe Juanita" I wouldn't say no -- I'm willing to give it another try, and hoping perhaps I was just in the wrong mood or ordered all the wrong things...
