mistuwa is great, and they have locations all over the country. the one in chicago also has a food court which is good for a snack. if you go on a sunday you can make a meal of the free samples.

I'm very jealous. You are spoiled in NY for choice. Katagiri is good, there are also good stores in East Village - Sunrise (in the smae complex as Yokocho) and M2M. As well as a place right on St Marks.
There is another branch of Sunrise down in Soho on the same street as Broadway Panhandler (I was just in there last week raiding their stock of oil solidifier) and just outside of new york (I can't remember, might be in New Jersey) there is a large Yaohan (although it might not be called that anymore) which I've never been to but heard rave reviews. You might google it.
Are you looking for a japanese grocery in general or a particular product?

The Yaohan is in Edgewater NJ, a mile or so north of the NY Waterway ferry.and just outside of new york (I can't remember, might be in New Jersey) there is a large Yaohan (although it might not be called that anymore) which I've never been to but heard rave reviews. You might google it.

Huge place, likely 50,000 square feet, and packed solid with shoppers every weekend

Helena, you are probably right. Yaohan turned into Mitsuwa in Chicago so I'll bet that the Yaohan in Edgewater NJ is now a Mitsuwa. I think even the one here in London is now a Mitsuwa.
