The US Department of Agriculture has a chart in its latest web release concerning exports to the EU. The scallops part interested me, as the exports have grown dramatically.

Total exports of scallops to the EU in 2003 was $25mn of frozen, prepared, and fresh. France took 60%, Belgium (!) another 15%, Netherlands about 10%, and various other places (Lux, UK, Finland, etc) took the rest. Austria didn't import any. (They're probably still irritated about losing their northern and southern coasts.)

The 500% increase in exports is due to the relative change of the dollar and euro, increased use of US products, perception of high quality, and a loosening of trade barriers. Total US exports of seafood totalled about $3.15bn.

Contrast this to Rutt's Hut, an old school Jersey hot dog legend. You can't even get across the parking lot without encountering pigeons who are so bold that they try to take bites of hot dogs from people who are walking to their cars. These pigeons are so brazen that they routinely shake down rats for lunch money.

The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born,
and sets a food discussion site?
