Raise your hand if you know where Istria is, or what language they speak?

We knew none of the above but still had a very nice meal at this jumpin' sports club*.

I can't remember the proper names but here's what we had: soup, house-made noodles with veal and gravy, fried calamari, grilled fish, mixed grilled meats. All the food was good, if not great. I'd love to go again in warmer weather to take advantage of the backyard.

There were several large parties there -- one taking over the entire top floor -- so it was very busy.

They had a lot of soccer trophies displayed upstairs behind the bar...

I loved this place. Eyebrows did too.

I especially loved the collection of old, elaborate accordions that the band was playing that night.

Yeah I saw the trophies (as well as the mounted deer heads) and I guess they organize teams...

We drank a Croation red wine that we liked...big, 14% alcohol, lots of fruit, in your face...went perfectly with the hearty food.

Perhaps the most famous Istrian-born restaurateur is Lidia Bastianich of Felidia in Midtown Manhattan.

haven't been there, but i've been past it a billion times.

anyone been to the czecholovozky (sp) club on 21st street (it has a blue awnining) near 30th avenue.

i haven't been there but i talked to the owners one night at ali's around last xmas -- they are loyal customers of his. i bet going there would be a good time.

Ooh, sounds good.

I bet Ali knows all these places. Gotta ask him where he likes the food the most. I'm interested in Rudar, too.
