So little can bring me to tears nowupon. But I cannot stop crying now. As the world gets a little emptier

Edit: Bruce and I exchanged some e-mails. He offered me a place to stay if I got to northern CA. He was an old friend I never met. Jesus.
Cambridge University Professor of Electrical Engineering, Sir Charles Oatley, in October, 1948, along with his student Dennis McMullan, began the research that led to the production of the first scanning electron microscope in 1965.

I thought you'd want to know.

Sad. That is a beautiful tribute you wrote.

He wrote of his condition in a thread on OA about quitting smoking. Carolyn, what does it mean "he caught the cough that is going around?" I had no idea it was potentially lethal. I know a couple of people who have had a severe cough for weeks now. This worries me.

There is a bad cold going around. Logan's had it for over a week, and I got it late last week. I am as week as a kitten from this hacking cough. I took some cough medicine that feels like it poisoned me, just an over-the-counter child's formula.

It's a bad one.

This is very sad.

Good guy. Straight shooter.

I will miss him.

You guys need to take this SERIOUSLY. None of this "over the counter" shit.: all cough medicine does is suppress the cough. It does not heal.

This is what killed Jim Henson and Bruce. It developed into pneumonia which is viral and difficult to stop.

So you guys need to get lots of bedrest, lots of fluids and stay away from other people!

Wow. This is sad. I'm sorry.
  • Once, during prohibition, I was forced to live for days on nothing but food and water.
  • I went to a restaurant that serves 'breakfast at any time'. So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.
  • I'm not saying my wife's a bad cook, but she uses a smoke alarm as a timer.

I had the cough for over a month. I started using Robitussin which did suppress it during the day but not at night. I called the doctor. He recommended Robitussin. When I explained this hadn't worked, he gave me an Rx for Hycodan. When this was just about gone (about 7-10 days later) finally I was better. Hooray for medical science!
I'd give it all up, for just a little bit more.

I don't want to take away from Bruce in this thread...but please let's not get people scared that this cough killed him. Bruce was not a well man. The cough may have been the thing that got him in the end - but it was because his health was very compromised already. He was waiting for a lung transplant at the time of his death.

I'd also like to attend the memorial service for him. I only met Bruce, in real life, once...for lunch at La Salette in Sonoma. But his positive attitude and generous nature was obvious. As was his care for his lovely partner, Patricia. The last time I heard from him several weeks ago he seemed certain that the infection that had invaded his lungs would soon be cured, just another sign of his basic optimism. I am stunned and deeply saddened

Sad indeed. He'll be missed, even by those of us who only read his posts.

This is incredibly sad news. I got to know Bruce a bit through an exchange of PMs during the summer and he was a very cool guy. He sent some of his wine to Abra's 4th of July party in PNW, but unfortunately I didn't make it to the party, and never got to taste it. He sent me a link with numerous interesting photos of his winery and activities there, including the Crush White '04. Carolyn, could you please ask Patricia if it's ok for me to post the link here for members to see pictures of Bruce and the winery? There are some real cute photos of him. My condolences to his Patricia.

I still can hardly believe he is gone. I hope he knew how much we enjoyed his personality and posts. Bruce, we'll see you on the other side man.

That's so sad to hear. I will miss his posts.

Wow. Greatly saddened. Funny how you think things will just always chug along as they have.

Last time I was in Napa, only a few months ago, Bruce and I had talked about meeting for lunch somewhere, but the timing didn't work out. We agreed that we'd do it "next time."

Sigh.
Ever notice that "what the hell" is always the right decision?
