Jian Bing in Shanghai
09 June 2006 - 04:51 AM
I became addicted to jianbing (a.k.a. dan bing) for breakfast during my recent brief trip to Shanghai and as if by magic came across these videos right after I returned. The "Northern" style is almost identical to the one made by a couple near our apartment. Price? About 20 cents US.

[SF] Starbucks Coming to North Beach?
03 April 2006 - 07:01 AM
There's an official looking Starbucks sign on the recently vacated J&B Burger place at Columbus and Green (in the same block and structure as Osteria del Forno, etc.) It says Starbucks is "coming soon."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but after letting them know about 10 years ago that they weren't welcome, we nailed it down by implementing an ordinance requiring a variance for any national chain to open a North Beach location. Unless Gavin Newsome or Aaron Peskin is the franchisee, I don't think *$ has a snowball's chance in hell of getting a variance.
What are they up to?

the ethics of factory farming and foie gras

I have an odd connection with Gary Danko, though I've never eaten at his joint or met him. GD and I are from the same desolate small town and High School (though some years apart), and my brother-in-law's oldest daughter (by his first wife) was GD's Senior Prom date. FWIW, my BIL's assessment is that GD is a little light in his loafers (can we be sued for that?)
I would think that you have to be in "fine dining" mode to convince yourself that the pleasures of eating foie gras justify the means used to produce it.
[Here we go again, or Why I am a Legacy Participant at eGullet]It was interesting and I'm glad I went. I had a fine time but I think I'm not all that into "fine dining".
