Grom on Bleecker Street has closed after 10 years at that location. There was always a line outside the door. Obviously a big rent hike is the reason. Ruth Messinger ran for Mayor years ago on a platform that included commercial rent control. She was prescient. The short-sightedness of greedy landlords and real estate "developers" will be the complete ruination of New York, which is well under way.Greedy landlords and

Ten years? It feels like only yesterday that I was shaking an imaginary fist at them for the temerity of stepping on Cones' turf, and worried this global chain would skim off enough business to put the neighborhood indie joint under.

Would not have guessed a decade later it'd be Cones still standing.

(I suppose Grom is still standing too, with two other locations in the city and 8,000 or so in Italy)

I've always found Grom to be....not as good as others.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing.  I forget what Grom had displaced (not Zito, I don't think), but there was definitely a "there goes THIS end of Bleecker Street" vibe when it came in.  And it's always been pricey, but I guess even charging top dollar wasn't enough, particularly in the winter when the drop-in crowd must go down considerably.

All the city has to do is cut real estate taxes on mixed use buildings by half and triple taxes on single family home.

Joe's Pizza, which moved a few doors North to a smaller space. Solid little slice shop. Jerry Orbach's favorite, making many a Law & Order cameo.

I used to work right by there, some two decades ago. 90% of my food intake came from Bleecker between Carmine and 7th.

Was just, over this past weekend, talking about the few extant Bronx delis.  And..

Nearly 60-year-old deli Loeser’s may not be long for the world. It closed on November 20 after the city found non-compliant plumbing that the Department of Building says poses a potential fire hazard. The city shut down the gas, and then the Department of Health closed it for not having hot water.

Harry & Ida's down for the count.
That's too bad. I dug that place. I do always find it a bit odd when places close yet claim they're "busier than ever" - barring sudden astronomical rent increases (which may be the case, they don't say) places busier than ever don't generally close.

I boycotted them after they finally admitted they weren’t “out of” the smoked eel every time I asked for it, but that they couldn’t source it any more and were never going to have it.

Same. After like seven tries. I even asked if I could sign up for an email alert or something.

We signed the lease on their space yesterday.

Finally a real restaurant.

(Congrats)

This will remain a department of ag space, and therefore cannot be a real restaurant.
