FWIW, KROQ (pretty big stuff in LA) has added "Sometime Around Midnight" to its rotation. The last time they did that with an unsigned band was with Weezer eons ago. Just sayin'.

Then that happened.

Hey, the band will be in NYC on 2/27 and 2/28. Check it out.

Sometimes, yes. They have 16 songs and generally do a tight set of 10. "Sometime Around Midnight" is about #7 on the set list. They "had a good week" in that KROQ and Indie 103.1 both put that song in their rotations this week. They finished their residency at Spaceland last night to a packed house. They don't have a deal yet.

Then that happened.

Some recent LA Times coverage. That's the band's bassist using a bow (and yes, girls, he's good lookin'). I would also agree with the writer that Deadly Syndrome is a band to watch but they don't seem quite as ready yet as TATE.

Then that happened.

Saw them last night at Pianos (in perhaps the smallest room I have ever heard amplified music in, and coming from someone who visits Maxwells and the Mercury Lounge frequently that means small).

They were just great, so great that I am going to the Annex tonight to see them again. They played for about an hour last night, in what appeared to be a record company showcase of several bands, and they were the first band so I was home before 10--nice on a weeknight. And tonight they are the openers so thankfully looks like another fairly early night.

They need to figure out what their 'sound' is I think--they were slightly all over the place. But very tight playing, great vocals, energetic. Also, several of them are in need of a stylist.

Thanks, hollywood, for putting them on my radar--best new band I have heard in a while.

Footnote: for anyone in NY feeling the need to get blind drunk for under $20, Pianos is your place. Liquor ordered on the rocks appears as about four ounces of the stuff poured on a couple of ice cubes. For $8. It took me almost two hours to finish this drink.

Glad you enjoyed them, Daisy. You have a point about the sound, but ultimately a lot rests on the singer/lyricist. Did they come on in a smoke machine made cloud? It's sort of their namesake, I guess.

Then that happened.

No smoke machine. The place they were playing last night is an extremely bare-bones, humble venue.

I just have to echo everything Daisy said, and to reiterate the thanks to Hollywood for giving us the heads-up. I love this band.

They apparently just got signed - I'll try to get some details tonight.

When I lived a few doors away, I used to go to Piano's for "Tinkle", David Cross' regular Sunday night comedy/music melange. Todd Barry and Jon Benjamin co-hosted. I vaguely recall seeing The Minus Five play there one week.

Wow!

Don't celebrate until I confirm. I may have been momentarily dazed by the adorable Mikel.

They were even better last night. Played basically the same set but it sounded tighter and they seemed more relaxed. Mikel and the bass player certainly are friendly, too.

The Annex is an odd space--long and narrow with an enormous bar, a couple of booths. Looks like it can't quite decide if it wants to be a nightclub or not. We did not hang around for the headliners--by then the Drunken Frat Boy contingent that seems inescapable later in the week on the LES had started to arrive.
