this has been a weird spring/early summer in minnesota. we had snow in early may and then endless rain in the second half of the month--very few sunny days, and a lot of cold nights. so who knows what the garden will do this year. but with last year's garden expansion i've planted a lot: 24 tomato plants in four widely spaced rows of six. 15 peppers. lettuce, chard. lots of herbs. and for the first time ever: watermelon (i have a bad feeling about these), cucumber, cauliflower. am also growing spinach and cilantro from seed, but i don't think much is going to come up. i tried getting the seeds in the ground between two crazy wet spells and i don't think the soil was dry enough--i doubt anything is going to be able to push its way through the crust at the surface now. later, i'm going to put carrots and beets in from seed as well, and hope for better luck this year.
last fall's garlic planting is doing really well (though i see that last year i was already cutting scapes by now). should have 40 good heads later in the summer. i wish more things could be grown as easily as garlic.
