Cask beers - are they worth the effort?

Must be new owners - since most of the old owners are dead.

Correct, although I thought it was one pump. Might be wrong.  As I recall, they usually offered British cask ales.

 

I'm very surprised that interest in cask ales hasn't taken off before.  In the UK, the campaign for what's called "artisanal beers," which took off in the 70s, was strongly focused on eradicating pressure taps for ales--in fact for everything except lagers and stouts. And it was very largely successful.  Craft or artisanal beers in the UK are synonymous with hand-pumped cask beers.  Non-specialist bars in the UK have all or almost all beers on hand pumps, except a few lagers and Guinness.

 

Exactly.  When I started traveling extensively in the UK in the early '80s, the "real ale" movement was in full swing, and cask conditioning was like a sign of bona fides.

 

I never understood why that didn't take off here (until, to a very limited extent, now).

DBA used to have two hand-drawn. And in its heyday, long before the Extreme Beer trend, they'd frequently have very appropriate British-style (or, more often, explicitly British) sessionable bitters on offer. 

 

And yeah, Minetta has one cask among its draughts, and last week it was a super-hoppy IPA, so no thanks.

That's what I sort of remembered.  My wife actually used to work a Friday night shift at dba, for a year or 2. Not tending bar, just tending the outside by telling people to keep their voices down.

 

And, it got she and I free drinks.

The problem is that you really need to finish the cask in a reasonable time - hard at Us style beer bars with 20 taps.

 

Good point.  Hard to present a selection while it remains a niche taste.  As a generalization, I think people here like their beer fizzier and colder than you get from a cask.

However - it was almost like the importer itself dried up.  Like no one was carrying them.

Owned by David McWater who has a bunch of bars in the neighborhood, but for some reason had no COI sitting on the CB licensing committee and denying licenses to new bars.

A seafood place near work, Anchor & Hope, has a really good beer selection and carries at least one cask ale.  We had an after-work gathering there a few weeks ago and I got the cask ale, which you can get in several different sizes including 3 oz.  It was properly room temperature, bitter, and not too fizzy.
