Tanoshi, Katsuei, or Sushi Dojo are probably the best affordable options. IMO, Katsuei is better than Taro if your friend wants to stick to Brooklyn.

Is Dojo much "cheaper" than Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya?

We had a great dinner there the other night, and even with cocktails and sake, it ran just over $200.

I was basing that off of Dojo's $45 10pc+roll set menu, and their $90 four-course omakase.

Haven't been to BRS Izakaya -- if you've been to the original on Sullivan St, would you mind telling me how you think it compares?

Many. But what's affordable to him?

i think $100 all-in would be the upper limit but somewhere between $50 and $80 would be far preferable. and i suspect that he would prefer b+ sushi at $60 than a- sushi at $80. but please feel free to make recommendations up and down the range.

I do believe that's right in the range of BRSI's set menu and lowest-priced omakase.

I've never been to the original, at least not that I can recall.

We always sit at the sushi bar, and have never been disappointed in the quality of the fish. The other night we ordered a la carte - some stuff had just come in from Japan and it was super.  Another nice thing about BRSI is that you can start off your meal with a bunch of non-sushi bar things; because, well, it's an izakaya also.

And - the cocktails are well made.

Usiwaka Maru has reopened.

In the price range you mentioned, at the B level, I'd consider Takahachi.

If it's really in his price range, I would too.  I doubt he could do better.

You know what?  If I remember right, Tanoshi is in his price range -- and I'd say it's at least as good as Ushiwakamaru.
