Struck that Shopsin’s soldiers on without what I took to be it’s main attraction. Maybe people do like the food.

 

The food wasn't that bad, and I bet people are relieved to be able to go without running afoul of Kenny.

I mean, it's (Shopsin's) a fucking diner, so I don't hang my head in shame for never having eaten there, because why bother? And since it's a fucking diner, yes, it will have customers, just like every remaining shitty diner in this city does.

 

As far as the stuff I've eaten (for lunch, mostly taking it home) at the new Essex Market, and which I've liked, Zerza, the Moroccan place, does a nice job, but I worry about them being able to sustain (their location, even in the new Essex Market, sucks). I had 3 rib lamb chops, over couscous, with a small salad (or veg?), and it was like $14. I also like (and have always liked) Ni Japanese Deli (though talk about markups!); I was at NJ Mitsuwa a week or two ago, and grabbed a bunch of onigiri to scarf in the (hide your eyes, Wilf) car on the drive home (because I won't take public transit when visiting the in-laws in Bergen County) and I think 6 of them were under $12. I think I paid the same price for 3 of them at Ni Japanese Deli, though he's for sure using higher quality rice. 

 

Samesa was not something I'd have again.  I can't decide whether I like Eat Gai (Thai fried chicken or Hainan chicken mostly) or not, though I've had it a few times.  I guess it's okay. Puebla Mexican didn't move me, though I think it's a worth another shot. I've yet to try Dominican Cravings, and I can't decide if it's because there's always a wait, or if the proffer doesn't move me.

 

There's a lot more to try.

 

And - I was chatting with Jeremiah and Fabian last night; both quite excited to be opening in the Market Line at the end of October. Should be some fun "snacks" to eat at their wine bar.

Joe, the menu at Shopsin’s is nothing like a normal shitty diner menu.

I don’t like the food, but it’s not regular diner food.

Seems like end of October is pushing it, but who knows.

Right, and I think there were even more optimistic starting dates earlier in the process.

 

The list of vendors is quite ambitious, I think...https://marketline.nyc/our-vendors.  More meat.  More tea.  More sake.  More everything.

 

We could probably run a nice, little pool as to what will be extant in 2 years from the actual opening date.

What is "regular diner food?"

 

At Shopsin's, sure, lots of variations on a theme. Lots of cute plate names. And a few "interesting" items. I guess it depends on your definition of a diner.

 

Remedy Diner's menu is fairly large, some might even say not regular diner food.

30 spaces, almost all leased, about half vented. Only one full liquor license allowed. It'll be exciting to observe for sure.

Joe, you just said normal shitty diner, so that’s what I meant by “regular.” The name plates on the Shopsin’s menu, which are legion, won’t be found at any normal shitty diner.

I don’t like the food, but not because it’s normal shitty diner food.

Remedy was really good for a couple of years after it opened. Used to go every week after late performances on Eldridge Street. Much better than normal diner. The execution fell off, but it’s a long time since I’ve eaten there.

I've always been fond of Shopsin's. Once it became a place you had to stand in line for an hour behind a line of twenty tourists tee-heeing about if they'd get kicked out (the mythology of which was quite overblown) - well, no... it wasn't worth that much effort just to eat heartattack-inducing food and (if he was in a chatty mood) debate with Kenny if the Mets were shittier this year or last.

Remedy... I dunno. I find them very generic, which I guess is kind of the point. The only notable quality I found was they were one of the few places to serve after a certain hour, and if you happened to be standing closer to it than Veselka or Odessa (or Noodletown if it was before 4AM) when the pressing urge to counterbalance whatever else you'd put in your system hit... okay, it's edible. Mostly. (The wallpaper paste the Eggs Benedict came smothered in rendered it impossible to finish)

I noticed that. Looks like a fairly generic gyro joint, but that's not the worst thing to have available. Just a block from the old 24-hour gyro (well, doner) place.

Empanada Mama is solid for 24-hour eats, too. And a new place just opened in Manhattan Chinatown that's doing 24-hr Yunnan "Crossing the Bridge" noodles. The 4AM options aren't too bad.

We started using Remedy because of the late hours, but I can't vouch for the food any more.  Used to be a lot of performers there after midnight.
