Topics I've Started

I am thoroughly biased fan of the San Domenico team, of course. The changes at the new place on Madison Square are really beyond what you would have expected, though. This isn't a tweaked, cheaper version of the original restaurant - it's a dramatic overhaul. Good news: the food is still excellent.

New Look Eater's Top 38

A curious number, but that's how many restaurants Eater has chosen to list as recommendations.

right here

My main reaction was that the list has a distinctive personality, and it's not mine. No surprise. It does include J.G. Melon, which is a corrective to my amazement that Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand. But then there are several places - Raoul's, Balthazar - which imply the involvement of somebody over thirty-five in the final selection.

Permanent Brunch

28 September 2009 - 02:45 PM

Given our 53 page (and counting) Redhead thread, I am surprised we don't have discussion of Permanent Brunch. Meg Grace is offering essentially a fancied up breakfast menu every evening here, as well as through brunch-time on weekends.

I think this one is a matter of taste. Thought and care has gone into the food, but I found some of it a bit overwhelming.

The trick here is to take well-chosen cheese and ham, stuff the French toast with it, and ladle a mustard-accented maple syrup over the result.

Has anyone else tried it? Stopping by a glass of good whisky and a plate of bacon would be a good way to approach it.

I tried lunch at this Latin-European place in the Wingate Inn on West 35th. The menu is wildly imaginative, but things didn't quite work out.

This seems an insane bargain - food by Boulud, Cambeborde, Chang, Pat LaFrieda et al, for $30. I assume it will be an absolute zoo.

Anyone thinking of going?
