#1448715 The New MoMA

We've been there twice since it's re-opened, including today. Lots of new nooks where you find unexpected surprises. I've got to say, their kids programing continues to impress. Considerably better than the Met. (and it's free! plus they give you a pass for a return visit)

We don't like turkey either. We had an American/Persian meal. Started with whisky sours, She Wolf's excellent sprouted rye,two cheeses--a Lancashire bomb and an aged French goat--and Iranian pistachios. American sides were bourbon yams and a steamed cauliflower and broccoli salad with lemon basil vinaigrette. Fantastic Persian main--lamb and celery and parsley leaf stew with dried limes, rice with spectaculr tah dig. Various wines. Dessert was pumpkin pie, cranberry cobbler, more whisky.

You can never have enough whisky.

Buy it. Seriously, there are plenty of things worth making from scratch. Almond flour is not one of them.

Packed the rose harissa I bought at Ottolenghi into the suitcase that was coming on to the plane as opposed to the one we checked. You can imagine what got pulled to be hand checked at security. It didn't occur to me that it would be considered "liquid". Needless to say, it was tossed. I was so annoyed I had to console myself by buying a bottle of gin and a bottle of single malt at Duty Free.

Daniel, the eggplant with corn and polenta sounds amazing.

And Paryzer, those photos are cruel! You're taunting us. It looks like the perfect summer meal.

#1442650 Reasons To Be Cheerful

We hit no traffic driving back to Manhattan after a day at the beach (on LI). And I made it all the way up Madison Ave (63rd to 97th) without having to stop for a single light!! That hasn't happened in years - they changed the timing of the lights on the avenues some years ago due to vision zero but for some reason this week they re-adjusted it.

Blovie was waxing nostalgic about the Good Humor Toasted Almond Bar. So I made toasted almond ice cream with almonds and sour cherries.

I'm thinking if I have the time and the strawberries are good I'm going to make strawberry chipotle jam.

Can someone please give me a heads up if they see sour cherries? I completely missed them last year :(

They should be around within the next week or so. I know that Battleview Orchards has them as part of their U-pick.

I have now been to the new location twice and I have to say it's a serious improvement over the last location both in appearance and attitude. The new store is significantly larger. In the front they sell baked goods and confections. They have space for classes with a pretty busy calendar - Nick Malgieri is teaching there this month. And the staff is helpful.  :o  In fact the person who was helping me convinced me that I didn't need to buy something I was considering as I explained my predicament to her.

Last night, as soon as I walked in from work, the boy asked if we could bake something.  :gold:

Later, while the cake was in the oven he announced that we had just made his half birthday cake.

#1435979 Bread

Posted by bloviatrix on 27 December 2018 - 03:43 AM

Last year a friend served us an amazing bread from Orwashers that was studded with cranberries, raisins and pistachios and redolent of orange zest. Shortly thereafter I discovered the recipe and have been wanting to try it. I finally had the time yesterday and I got to use the bread proofing setting on my oven! The recipe produces 4 loaves, so i baked off two and the other two are shaped and in the freezer. I've got to say, it's pretty damn good.

Can you link to the recipe?

Of course - Orwasher's Holiday Challah
