Just received the list of alumni planning to attend a milestone college reunion.    Why is it that the ones coming are the same super-rahrahs you successfully avoided during your school years?

Of course, maybe they've changed.

Maybe I'VE changed.

I just attended my college 50th class reunion. And I too was very apprehensive about attending because of the list of those attending, few of which I really hung out with in college.

However, just as I had not yet registered, many others had held back until the last minute. It turned out to be a grand time, partly because of some last-minute registrants, including one favorite drinking buddy, and because so many of us had grown up and mellowed to the extent that we could enjoy being around each other even it we hadn't necessarily done so 50 years ago.

I must admit that this was a small college, only 365 in my entering freshman class, with 165 of those making it to graduation. Due to the small size of the school, all the students and faculty and staff knew each other . Another plus for the reunion was the opportunity I had to tell my favorite professor, who was only 5 years ahead of us and is now on the Board of Trustees, how much she had meant to me.

Usually I'd store them in their liquid. However, one of RG's beans, the Alubia Blanco, have a very thick/viscous broth after chilling, and it would be difficult to separate them from their broth without reheating and then cooling down. I have beans in a giant veggie saladofteny and use some of the broth as a substitute for oil in a dressing. Getting the broth out of the container without any beans along was a problem this week with the Alubias.

Just split each bag. I live alone and get 3 1/2 cups of cooked beans out of 1/2 package [225g] to 3 1/2 cups water.

If you're not regularly stretching the Achilles, you'll have this problem periodically. You can look online, or do what I do: stand near a wall with one foot back about three feet [other foot's toes against wall], lean forward with back leg straight as you hinge forward at the ankle, then bend back knee to get the Achilles stretching.

I got some devastating news about my dear sweet Pepper. It looks like she has cancer and we are have started end of life care to see if we can make her more comfortable. I am absolutely heartbroken. Being as she's 19, I knew this was coming, but it still makes it horrible. Also having to give a beloved pet subcutaneous fluids is really heart wrenching. I just don't know what I'm going to do without that cat.

No matter how prepared you might have been, it's still horrible news and I remember what that heart ache is like. My thoughts are with both of you.

I'll believe it's "the end" when I hear you've fully unpacked.

If she's like many of us, that end will never come....

Leaving early tomorrow morning for two weeks in China, mostly Shanghai, but 4 or 5 days in Beijing.

Originally, trip was to include a side trip to Tai Yuan, where my traveling companion's daughter-in-law's family lives, so that we could attend a wedding banquet. However, she has come down with pregnancy and is not traveling, even by train.

Fortunately, her American husband will shepherd us to/through Beijing. He's been teaching English as a second language for several years now.

madhur jaffrey has a very similar, but far less fussy carrot-turnip-cauliflower pickle recipe in one of her books. uses less oil and does not require sunning.
