#1410575 Ice Cream

Posted by splinky on 02 July 2017 - 05:22 AM

So now I'm on a sherbet kick. This week's flavor is from my well-worn copy of David Leibovitz's The Perfect Scoop - Mocha Sherbet. I'm tempted to make a slushie with it.

i sometimes do the Jean-Paul Hévin chocolate ice cube recipe and throw the finished ice cubes into the vitamix with coffee, milk and/or a little liqueur

#1404872 Hamilton, a musical

Posted by splinky on 30 March 2017 - 12:09 PM

Finally made it to Hamilton. Was sad that I wouldn't see Chris Jackson and Daveed Diggs but still had high expectations. The show has everything and is everything! All the things you expect from a great show on Broadway and a little bit more. Javier Munoz has a voice so superior to Miranda's that it made the songs even better. Taran Killam is a wonderful King George. Brandon Victor Dixon was a spectacular Burr and is much more likable than Leslie Odom Jr. Seth Stewart taking over Lafayette/Jefferson was entertaining but a little like a fine high school musical star having his moment and not as seasoned as the rest of the cast. Worth every penny of the price and so much more than a rap musical.

#1404417 The Global Hair Trade

Posted by splinky on 23 March 2017 - 04:41 AM

lots of promises are made. there have been huge scandals where hair for sheitels is not actually kosher because it was gathered for rituals deemed to be idolatrous and resold to wigmakers. lots of hair gathered in india is treated to resemble hair from europe. european hair especially natural virgin blonde hair is more expensive. not only is this deceptive but the hair is damaged in the treatment process and will not wear as well.

#1403312 2017 International Restaurant & Foodservice Show of New York

Posted by splinky on 07 March 2017 - 01:18 AM

The show started on Sunday but I spent only 2 hours today. Lots of Brooklyn made vodka and upstate whiskies. Not as much certified gluten free foods as past years but plenty to choose from. Lots of sausages and organic meats. Flavored waters, low sugar drinks and non-dairy ice creams seemed to be the trend items. I had a trout macaron that I will remember fondly for the rest of my life.

#1402616 Places we're curious about

Posted by splinky on 22 February 2017 - 01:22 AM

I'd say this is not a destination, but if you're in the neighborhood...

Why are you in the neighborhood?

Perfect for the students at LaGuardia Community College.  And unlike the upcoming Steak and Run place near NYU this restaurant looks like it will have some legs.

The more interesting thing to me is why Saran and his partner chose that location.  Maybe the rent was low enough and the concept bulletproof enough to make it a sure fire moneymaker.  Nothing wrong with that.  Or maybe they plan to open similar places in more prominent neighborhoods and they can use the Thomson St. location as a pilot to shake down the design of a mini chain.

there was an indian restaurant there before perhaps the partner already had the lease on the space
