The area is still a deadzone. For coffee and breakfast, I really have no idea, other than the usual starbucks/second cup/garbage places or god forbid, tim hortons. There is a pain quotidien on greene, though i'm not sure its worth even the short walk.

As for a casual social meal, the only real options are Imadake, an ok izakaya type place, Kazu another alright izakaya, but further east on St-Cath (there usually always is a line). Another choice would be Taverne on the Square, with alright food, though a bit expensive for what it is. It is also populated by the Westmount crowd.

Tbh, she would be better off taking the metro one stop from atwater to lionel groulx and walking from there. Its a 6 minute walk from the subway to any of the Joe Beef family of restaurants and Burgundy lion. Vin papillon doesn't have a bar (stupid right?), so its solo dining at a table.

Sorry I can't be of much help. It really is a shitty area.

Edit: There is a decent coffee place Lilli & Oli, but its in little burgundy as well.

While eater can be shit, it does facilitate the dissemination of this sort of news. Otherwise, you either have to know people in the industry, or sift through the chowhound noise. Chesterman's twitter feed is useful, but you have to wade through the language policy posts

Its great having a chef like Aaron around. Helps break the monotony of JB/APDC imitators. Hopefully it stays viable, but we dont have a strong history of supporting these types of places.

As for the CCeP place Le Serpent, your guess is as good as mine. They slated one of the Mercuri bros(of Bronte) as chef, but according to reports he was looking at two spaces for 2 different places. Le Serpent was supposed to open this summer, which obviously didn't happen. So status unknown.
