In the last photo, what's the thing with the vacuum tubes?

Hope he finally got to sit in the front row.
  3. Tonight, the first Dungeness crabs of the season.
  4. Pan-seared chicken thighs with caramelized onions and fennel, served over red lentils cooked in the Insta-Pot.

What a loss. I was dreading this news. @bloviatrix, I remember that dinner--it was at Cafe Katja. Barry was really sad to see N and I leave New York. As I posted on Jesikka's thread, he was really supportive to us, even treating us to dinner at Le Bernardin when N got her PhD (which I couldn't appreciate fully because we drank too much wine).

Thank you for this heartfelt post, Jesikka. I was dreading this news. Barry was so kind and supportive to me and N, even treating us to dinner at Le Bernardin when N got her PhD. I'll miss him very much, and will raise a glass tonight from the other side of the country.
  7. Some people only want familiar. Hence the popularity of Applebee's at Fisherman's Wharf and Olive Garden in Times Square.
  8. The Crock-Pot was invented by an American Jew of Lithuanian heritage to help his relatives with their Shabbat cooking.
  9. I finally got around to making the first of the loaves with the frozen spent grain. It's a little wonky looking, and I think some of our yeast is out of date, but it rose fine and it smells great. We'll see what it taste like.
  10. I didn't realize how young she was when she did her crusade--still in her late 30s.
  11. Our next-door neighbors cut down their lemon tree. It's only an annoyance because we were used to the free lemons from the branches which overhung into our yard.
  12. Someone I once worked with was thisclose to having his house destroyed in one of San Diego's wildfires. The fire literally stopped at the house next door.
  13. Like all of the movies--with a happy ending. Very nice to have those two back.
  14. Buckwheat crepes two ways: topped with sauteed leeks and a baked egg for dinner, and topped with bananas flambe for dessert.
  15. Watching this tonight, and very much looking forward to it.
  16. Soup with RG's Super Lucky Black-Eyed Peas, tree kale from our garden, and sweet Italian sausage.
  17. We're having scallops cooked in garlic butter (plus crusty bread) for lunch today. Later, there will be pre-dinner cocktails at our favorite tiki bar in Alameda, followed by dinner somewhere that doesn't have a NYE menu. Tomorrow will be the Rose Parade on TV and black-eyed peas with sausage for midday meal.
  18. The only thing that impressed me from your photos was the siphon coffee maker. It's a pretty neat method of brewing coffee, and one that's been around for a long time.

At 87. I had the pleasure of seeing her onstage in "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife".
  20. They showed it to us in middle school. Much snickering ensued.
  21. Christmas dinner for 3 people: Ham with a gingersnap-mustard crust Roast chicken with oranges and sausage stuffing Potatoes roasted in duck fat Roasted Brussels sprouts and carrots For dessert: packaged Christmas pudding with Bird's custard and a not-bad mulled wine I picked up in Pennsylvania Leftovers tonight, and at some point over the weekend N will make a holiday leftovers pie (maybe the Hairy Bikers' version, if she can find kumquats).
  22. Today's dinner will be a simple linguini with (canned) clam sauce. (Local fishmonger was completely out of fresh clams and mussels.)
  23. No kidding. I see that when I venture into the two CVS stores by work. The Walgreen's is only slightly better.
  24. The same could be said for San Franciscans. Hell, even my local suburban CVS has half the items locked up.
