  1. The most recent RG Bean Club shipment included California Coronas, a new bean akin to the Royal Coronas. I made the newsletter recipe using the beans plus kale, orzo, and canned whole tomatoes. It calls for making a "cheesy topping" out of cashews and nutritional yeast, but since I eat dairy I didn't bother with that and used real Parmesan. I may substitute Pecorino Romano for the leftovers.
  2. Just found out that the husband of one of my cousins, who's just 2 months younger than me, has non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Don't know what stage. Her older sister's husband also died young from cancer. Needless to say, we won't be having Thanksgiving at their house. My sister is probably going to step up to the plate--she has the room.
  3. Well lah-dee-dah.
  4. Hey, no spoilers! 😜
  5. A friend of mine sent me a Jersey Shore-themed scratch-off ticket for my birthday, and I won $50 with it! Fortunately, I'll be able to cash it in when I visit NJ next month.
  6. And we're out. Hoping Seattle gets to the WS, because they've never been.
  7. Considering that it's now up to $10 an issue, it's a relative bargain.
  8. Excellent prosciutto and provolone sandwich, on whatever the Italian equivalent of a baguette is (sourdough division). From Toscano Brothers in North Beach, a bakery run by the pizzaiolo Tony Gemignani.
  9. Double mastectomy later this month. After that, not sure what they're going to recommend.
  10. One of my oldest and dearest friends, who now lives 2 time zones away from me, has Stage 2 breast cancer.
  11. I got the Knicks and the Hot Duck ones wrong. I don't really follow basketball and the Hot Duck thing happened after I moved away.
  12. No, but I went to the Giants' Jewish Heritage Night last month and the "Rally Rabbi" blew the shofar then.
  13. Looks like we do. The first thing I did after Yom Kippur ended was turn on my phone and check the score.
  14. I certainly remember the old days, before any galleries moved in. I have fond memories of occasionally going to a certain, ahem, club and being very worried that I wouldn't be able to catch a taxi out of there.
  15. The recipe specifically calls for prepared horseradish, so make adjustments for fresh accordingly.
  16. This NY Times recipe for salmon with a horseradish-tarragon sauce. I used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream (per the recipe) because that's what I had on hand, threw in a golden beet along with the potatoes, and substituted steelhead trout for the salmon because my fishmonger had large fillets of trout and only smaller salmon steaks. The recipe specifies skinless fish and I forgot to ask them to take the skin off; alas, the skin does not get crispy with this baking method (hence the caveat). Prepared horseradish in a jar always puts me in a Passover state of mind, no matter what time of year.
  17. Spinach-cheese ravioli (purchased) with homemade puttanesca sauce.
  18. Going to have Lillet & soda later because it's too darn hot for much else.
  19. I have a lot of nostalgia around the late H&H Bagels, so Boichik Bagels carry me back, even if they are really expensive. And they have the best black & whites I've eaten out here.
  20. Going out to eat, since I need to hightail it to shul after work and N has to be on campus for the next couple of days. I bought a round challah from Boichik Bagels.
  21. At 92.
  22. We also have a bumper crop of passion fruit.
  23. The first bearings of our persimmon tree have arrived. They should be fully ripe in a few weeks.
  24. N revived her sourdough starter to make sourdough banana-pecan bread with the last of our homegrown bananas. The discard went into triple-chocolate waffles for breakfast today.
