  1. Score one for Rancho Gordo.... Beans versus Cancer
  2. Are you talking about "a fine tang of faintly scented urine?" Try using relish, like Leopold Bloom:
  3. Is Celia (I wish you wouldn't say "Madame Chiang") involved with the resto? I hope it's better food than the food her brother's name is on.
  4. He's also aware that in that neighborhood flageoletion is in.
  5. Well, RG didn't make it to the FPFM on Saturday (unless they moved his stall) so he may still be partying. He already said he wouldn't be there, in post 163. Well, as the herring said to the whale, "Am I my blubber's kipper?"

  7. I believe they came out of the rear end of a chicken, as is customary in China.
  8. I became addicted to jianbing (a.k.a. dan bing) for breakfast during my recent brief trip to Shanghai and as if by magic came across these videos right after I returned. The "Northern" style is almost identical to the one made by a couple near our apartment. Price? About 20 cents US. Making "Northern Style" jianbing Making "Southern Style" jianbing
  9. I was just in Shanghai where I had a steamer of a dozen of Shanghai's best xiaolong bao and a cold 640 ml bottle of Kirin beer for about US $1.20. Hmm, let me see.... $400 divided by $1.20 is.......
  10. Yeah, they've probably seen those "Wanna get away?" commercials.
  11. I found this quote somewhat offensive: The cuisine(s) of Asia can stand side by side with the cuisine(s) of Europe in terms of worth, IMHO. Perhaps someone can explain to me what defines the "level" of European cuisine if not only the numbers on that little piece of paper presented to the diner at the end of the meal.
  12. Yeah, she added a feminine touch to my bachelor pad with curtains, among other things. And it was soon curtains for my carefree bachelor life.
  13. My first wife (then a refugee from Reed College) was living in that building when I met her, circa 1966. It was a rooming house for poor artists, owned by an architect (Piero Patri) and known as the "Patri House." Some of its current opulence is, of course, added on. When the 1966 Hunters Point Riots spilled over to the Western Addition, my wife-to-be was afraid to go home one night, moved into my Telegraph Hill pad, and it was literally curtains for me.
  14. Haute Cuisine along Seoul's Rodeo Drive
  15. The show was actually called "The Lineup." It didn't become "San Francisco Beat" until it went into syndication. A lot of the "look" came also from the Pier facades, some of which still exist, and the institutional grimness of the old Hall of Justice on Kearny Street, which was torn down for a Holiday Inn (recently rebranded as a Hilton). I actually lived for a couple of years in the same building where Dashiell Hammet had lived when he wrote a lot of his stuff, 20 Monroe St. Monroe St. has since been renamed as Dashiell Hammet Place. The alleyway where Brigid did in Miles was Bur
  16. A little OT, but how does Yelp stack up for credibility? I often wish for something better organized than Chowhound, and sfSurvey is something of a joke because so many meaningless reviews are submitted just to build up someone's chances at winning free dinners in that lottery they have.
  17. Is it bad? I've never been but I know people who love it. But that was 10 years ago now that I think of it. Mr Soup, I wish you'd start a thread on your favorite Asian places in the city. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I hated the experience of Slanted Door so I imagine we're off to a good start! The Straits Cafe was a good and fun place to go to 15 years ago, when the food was still Mom-driven. Then mom got thrown out with the dishwater, or something, and Chef-driven became the hallmark, with pricey "Signature" entrees peddled to the dot-commies, vertical construction and all. I
  18. Amanda Berne's "Scoop" colyum in the Chronicle today had some more details on Bloomies food tenants-to-be:
  19. According to the Chronicle, the supermarket will be on the "lower level" which I assume is the same level as the BART/MUNI Metro mezzanine. Of course there will still be an escalator ride down the the train level, but speaking as a veteran transit-riding shopper (I even do Costco by bus) I don't think it'll be much of a deterrent to our hardy singles and DINKies. You've been in the boonies to long, methinks. Nobody seems to have noticed the Straits Cafe tenancy. Yet another pricey, phoney Asian place (and Chris Yeo is jonesing for celebrity far mre than Charles Phan).
  20. Yikes! That space IS very tiny. That feeds the insidiousness of Starbucks; small space, low overhead and huge markup and they can stick, as hard to dislodge as fleas. Voting with our feet will be less effective than it was for the departed Ben & Jerry's Sounds like another interesting battle in the works. For once I may thank God for Marsha Garland, which I am loathe to do, but "My enemy's enemy is my friend."
  21. There's an official looking Starbucks sign on the recently vacated J&B Burger place at Columbus and Green (in the same block and structure as Osteria del Forno, etc.) It says Starbucks is "coming soon." Correct me if I'm wrong, but after letting them know about 10 years ago that they weren't welcome, we nailed it down by implementing an ordinance requiring a variance for any national chain to open a North Beach location. Unless Gavin Newsome or Aaron Peskin is the franchisee, I don't think *$ has a snowball's chance in hell of getting a variance. What are they up to?
  22. It wasn't so much the dog loving the car that I was concerned about. It was more GG loving the large dog on the road trip that gave me 'paws.' Why am I suddenly channeling Chevy Chase?
  23. well, there's always stupidity. Fuck you very much! And I mean that in the nice way. For me, I'd like to think a magazine may want photos of my beans at a high res or I may want to make a poster. Hasn't happened but I feel good knowing I can and you can't. Let me know when you do that poster of your beans. I'm getting tired of my Farrah Fawcett poster.
