  1. Ginger Rogers 1 oz black rum 1 oz cognac 3/4 oz lemon juice 3/4 oz ginger syrup .5 oz simple syrup a dash of Peychaud's bitters (I used angostura) Shake with ice and strain into a chilled coupe.
  2. Have I ever mentioned how much I love John McPhee. The guy is a treasure.
  3. Where do you keep your ID? Because really, with your set up that's the only thing you need. 24 years ago I was headed to Chicago for a business trip. I ran out of the office and forgot my purse - which I realized when I arrived to check in. In my case, I had taken a black car so I didn't need my wallet. If it wasn't for requiring ID I would have have traveled without my wallet - I was meeting up with colleagues who could have expensed everything for me. But alas, they wouldn't let me check in so I had to grab a cab back into midtown. (the good thing about traveling to Chicago is if you miss your flight you can always catch the next one an hour later).
  4. From the archives...I learned over the the weekend that in July, 1978 John McPhee wrote a piece about the greenmarket called Giving Good Weight. Haven't read it yet, but I printed out all 26 pages. Looking forward to reading it. They used really small type in those days.
  5. I've read almost every one of the Bosch books and I couldn't get through the first season. I didn't like the casting of Bosch.

I made Jerusalem Sesame Bread in lieu of challah for shabbat. They get brushed with an olive oil salt mixture when they come out of the oven which gives them a pretzel-ish quality. I need some work on proofing. I could see that it was a little under-proofed when I sliced into it. I'm not sure whether it I need to go longer with the first or second rise. Suggestions anyone?

Yep. My ingredient cost to make Milk Chocolate Guinness Ice Cream was close to $20 to make a quart (this does not include the cost of my time). Spouse thought it was crazy, but frankly - I'm never going to get that flavor retail. Not will you get the quality of ingredients.
  8. I put in a La Boite order in early May and I'm almost done with the Dvora blend. I've been using it in everything.
  9. @Sneakeater - where exactly do they put the market? I've always tried to figure it out when we drive through the area but I can't.
  10. A hot steamy night requires a frozen strawberry thai basil margarita.
  11. Leftover whitefish that didn't go into the chowder can only mean one thing - smoked whitefish salad sandwich for lunch!!! On a very good challah roll.
  12. My condolences to you and the family. It's so hard to lose a beloved pet. Please give Alu some belly rubs and scritches on my behalf. I'm sure she's missing her sister. (gorgeous photos!)
  13. I made a sour cherry nectarine clafouti type dessert. Crazy recipe that called for 2 sticks of brown butter. But it's so good - a little on the rich side. I think buttermilk ice cream would be the perfect accompaniment.

I've created a monster! Boy liked the chowder so much that he requested at lunch today and again for dinner tonight. Our dinner last night was the chowder, roasted salmon with tomatillo salsa, corn, and a salad of green & wax beans, roasted chickpeas with a preserved lemon-harissa vinaigrette. Route Victor Lodi Chardonnay 2019 to drink. Dessert was a clafouti-type dessert with sour cherries and nectarines.
