Right. And want to compare Miley with Olivia Rodrigo? So far so good.
  2. Yesterday I visited Rosenthal’s wine store, walking uphill on Lex from 103rd and then downhill to 96th and could only be reminded of this extremely dumb statement. ETA: Quoting erases the original quote? “Manhattan is essentially flat.” Nuts.
  3. Very selfishly, I hope California gets it act together before my birthday trip in early March.

Tracy fucking Chapman out there with Luke Combs. I am actually shedding tears. And how did Miley beat all those much more happening performers who aren’t even close to her for best solo pop thing?
  5. Birkenhead I visited by taking the ferry ‘cross the Mersey from Liverpool but I never got off the other side. Hinds should consider Gerry and the Pacemakers covers. Ana singing “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” would make me very happy.
  6. They are working on a Radiohead cover. Not sure about that. But they also just played Birmingham, a place I visited once in my life and got into a fight. Very strange for me to see these amazing stars selling out venues in places I would never dream of visiting.
  7. Also, in the famous British fish’n’chips shops, haddock was always an alternative to cod. But I don’t know if they still exist.
  8. Growing up, smoked haddock topped with an egg was a regular and unsurprising supper. Or the haddock diced into scrambled eggs. Different place. I can’t remember when I last ate it.
  9. Oh fuck no. So many memories. I am going to have to listen to the MC5 all night now.
  10. It is good, and although there are laughs, it's more a study of a lost soul than a comedy. Intersting choice: about a third of the dialogue is in French, no subtitles. Adele is underrated.
  11. Countless clips from the UK shows (IG @hindsband) are just thrilling. I have to adjust to the new drummer looking like the old bassist (Ade); just a hair thing.
  12. Bringing my obsession to where I can be ignored. Not only are they performing “Caribbean Moon” on the near sold out UK tour, but also “Spanish Bombs.” I hope they haven’t dropped “Davy Crockett” as the insane closer. Getting used to seeing the new rhythm section but I don’t even know their names. It’s very clear from all the branding I am seeing that Hinds is a duo, Ana and Carlotta, with supporting cast; that is a change from how the previous four piece was presented, but I guess it’s honest.

    Gigs

I should probably start a separate thread for Hinds but for anyone following along they sold out almost all their UK shows and from the IG clips it looks like Caribbean Moon is back in the set list (how I originally found them, searching for Kevin Ayers clips),
  14. Wow, Adia Victoria has some new music.

    Supper

Roasted a hunk of salmon with olive oil and rosemary. I know that’s boring. With green beans drenched in butter. Then my last piece of cheese which means I have a project for tomorrow. The Marques de Riscal Verdejo is so cheap it’s almost free.
  16. It was Finnish?
  17. Two added to my list: El Conde, in which General Pinochet is an actual vampire and Zero Fucks Given, for the title and because Adele Exarchopoulos is rarely a waste of time (The Five Devils was great).
  18. Well, certainly they're all funnier than Leningrad Cowboys.
  19. For those with Mubi, I commend Fallen Leaves, as wonderful as all Aki Kaurismaki's movies (except that dreadful comedy). Slowish cinema.
  20. I've added it to the mental list of places where there is no point looking for a table.
  21. I stumbled over an outstanding (and heartbreaking) report on the Morscher's closing by Roger Clark on New York 1. Behind the scenes sausage making, interviews with long time (40 year) customers and quite a few tears shed. I am sure it will be shown repeatedly for the next couple of days, but who knows when?

    Supper

I did get to Arthur Avenue before the holidays, but it's probably 20 years since I went to Roberto's.

    Supper

So for breakfast I fried bacon to be piled into a (low carb) biscuit. Tonight I heated the bacon grease and fried slices of (low carb) bread to be topped with slices of delicious mild souse. There was some dabbing of wasabi on the souse because lunch was excellent scallop sashimi from HMart on Broadway near 79th. All carefully planned of course.

    Tom Smothers

Also absolutely no Phil Collins. Ever.
  25. Below Deck Med season 8 is done and we have to wait until Feb 5 for the first episode of the next season of Below Deck OG. Happy I have only this reality TV addiction.
