I suppose that since I am re-reading Waverley Root's 1969 Paris Dining Guide enjoying the descriptions of restaurants I will never visit, there's no good reason I shouldn't read Tejal Rao's reviews.

Seahawks vs. Patriots. Yawn. Hype is heavy in the Bay Area.
Pregame and halftime music will be the high point for sure.
I will search out the pregame because I think Green Day will be kind of interesting. We know Conejon Malo will be interesting.

Oooooh. With Robbie. Digging out Police and Thieves.

Yes, Formaggio, Foster Sundry, two regular stops for me. All the best to him.

And then the so-called Highland Sazerac, working through my single malt. May have needed more Peychaud's.

Made it tonight with my single malt. Delicious.

San Diego is fun.

Deadly Sin
- 2 oz. bourbon
- 1/3 oz. sweet vermouth
- 1/4 oz. maraschino liqueur
- 1 dash orange bitters
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange peel.
Okay, a whisky-based Martinez. Sounds good.

Given all the indoor down time this weekend, I will be done with Steppenwolf fast.
Memories. I first (mis)read it as a teen. Must have re-read several times. I can't do Hesse's fantasy-Eastern religion stuff any more. This book at least has a contemporary 1927 German setting.
Slight regret, though, for The Glass Bead Game. I must have been about 13 when my parents took me on holiday to Sorrento. They enjoyed the sunshine and the beautiful Bay of Naples views. I sat in the hotel lounge reading Hesse. And becoming who I would eventually be.

Running out of low carb bread and didn't see getting a delivery until some time next week. Picked up Mission zero carb burrito wraps as a fallback.
So breakfast burrito with duck egg, fried Induveca salami, chopped cheese, lettuce, sour cream and hot sauce. I am not going to need lunch.

As a change from Hinds, I just bought a ticket for Piri & Tommy at Baby's All Right in March. First US tour.
Aw, the tour is canceled. Looks like they finally couldn't work together any more (they have been exes for a while). Also some stuff about what's happening in America.
I had been excited for this.

I guess I linger on the gin longer. I was torn between Ardbeg and Laphroiag. Those are my peaty favorites.
-
Severe weather causes a switch from gin to whisky. Armed with a bottle of Laphroig 10yo, I made an all-single malt Rob Roy. Then I noticed a suggestion for a Perfect Rob Roy, a Perfect Martini of course with the different liquor base.
Maybe a silver lining in the snowstorm.

Ah, makes sense.

I think we're gonna have another one - planning on making vegetarian black pudding (vegetarian haggis looks way too complicated).
Vegetarian black pudding should be easy as you won't have to source any blood.

Almost through Oblomov. It is funny. It also has some lengthy digressions. I guess readers back then had all the time in the world; I'd say the chapters about Olga's love interests could be more succinct. But an achievement to create an enduring near-500 page novel with a hero who can barely put his slippers on.
23. Hawthorne, The Marble Faun
24. Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms (done)
25. Hesse, Steppenwolf
26. Huysmans, La-Bas
27. James, Portrait of a Lady
I am going to be strategic. Hawthorne and James are both big, Hesse and Huysmans much more bite-size; so I'll mix up the order. I considered The Scarlet Letter, but I just enjoy The Marble Faun much more.

Robbie Burns Day came early!

Counts for everything.

I get all that from walking down the street somewhere like around Times Square. Obvious physical effort plus figuring out very fast what other people are planning to do (stop, swerve, stop again, jaywalk badly).

Actual sleet right now.

Thanks but Memphis isn't on my list. I have done Tennessee a lot. Trying to get to new places.

I guess I am cheerful. My apartment is so clean I don't dare touch anything. I treated it to a deep clean, partly because I had read about a Brooklyn-based Latin women's collective. I would be paying the women and their own business rather than some .com.
It was great, but two women working hard for 6 hours is obviously 12 hours of cleaning. They should have charged more!
I did tip heartily.

I got an email today promoting an appearance by David Amram at the Grolier Club. Jazz guy, worked with the Beats in the fifties and wrote the score for Pull My Daisy (short movie featuring Kerouac, Ginsburg etc).
I know I have seen him before, almost certainly appearing with John Ashbery at a MoMA event many years ago.
I grabbed a (free) ticket for the show, then looked him up. 95 years old. Hang on until March, David, I will too.
