Well if it’s not European it’s not really a restaurant. Some high end Japanese places perhaps admitted. (I don’t entirely mean that but it’s at the root of all the ranking debates.)

You Learn Something New Every Day (cont.)

The Russian Samovar used to be the famous Sinatra hangout spot, Jilly’s. -
I tried a few times to get a table here way back, but it was a tough one. Still looks busy. However, I went to a private dinner (about a dozen people) in an upstairs room and it was very good. The menu was edited to three or four choices in each course for the group, but the dishes are all on the regular menu (except the scallop dish, I see). Burrata with some of the best fresh-cut prosciutto di Parma I've had in a long time. Yellow and green gramigna with a sausage ragu. Scallops with capers and pickled cauliflower florets. I nibbled some of the ice cream which came with a cake for dessert. I liked the wine too, but never saw the label.

That much, for sure when I was young, and I would wake up somewhere I didn’t know with the furniture broken. Really. Or I had thrown up in my girlfriend’s hat.

We all lost that big bunch of years. I don’t know when I was last there, but I am tempted to go back,

A few weeks ago, “Mambar Pierette.” I didn’t know if anyone here would be interested. I saw it on Criterion. A Cameroon based and made feature about a woman making clothes for her local friends in a village, trying to pull together a few pennies; confronted by theft and a storm. You just watch her carrying on. This is the kind of cinema I love, right down to getting the water out of the house. (Warning: No super heroes.)

Will not be staying for six, Gary Shteynhart.

I stayed for the second martini. Sunshine 😎

Had a meeting on Wall Street after which I decided to Uber over to City Vineyard to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sun sparkle on the river. Thunderstorm.

Has anyone been to Wallse in living memory? I just passed it which prompted me to look up the menu. Short rib goulash, venison, veal rack, schnitzel. I think I could find something there.

Fancy? No. Long-braised tripe with carrots and onions. I reduced broth from the tripe with mustard and red wine, realized I was out of butter so it was never going to be glossy. But anyone who eats meat should be eating tripe, the textures and flavors are always satisfying.

It’s a pretty nuisance.

Bagels: “small, dense, salty, and malty…” Sounds like the bagels I recall from my childhood in London and indeed New York bagels have always disappointed me in comparison. Haven’t read the article yet.

Shteyngart was entertaining; useful in that it mentioned some bars I didn’t know and some drinks I would at all costs avoid. I don’t know if poetic license was invoked in terms of his vast intake. Six to ten pro martini cocktails in one evening? Even over a few hours and with blotting paper food, few people would remain upright. Must be more than a bottle of gin/vodka. I can drink, but I would only essay six martinis if they were the thimble-sized variety served in The Thin Man movies. I recall that at Mont Blanc 52, for example, where the capacious glasses were filled to the rim, my strict limit was two. Okay, then I’d have a beer.

Sports stadiums are the worst until the weather really warms up.

The last print issue was a double, but it is two weeks old, so as Stephanie says there should be a new May 6 print issue. I just wondered if the digital food issue affects that. It shouldn't.

Place I haven't thought about for years, thanks.

I need to upgrade my desktop. I am running some prehistoric version of Windows, but I can't download a newer version on this PC.
-
It is a first. But it's quite confusing. I found it by searching. Once I found it I discovered I could open it in the app. But if you go direct to the app, it's not on the scroll of digital issues. The top one there is still the wonderful cat cover on the Technology issue. Also, does this mean there won't be a new print issue Monday?

Thanks for the suggestions. I do like Petit Mad, as I foolishly call it.

Strolling out tonight in a short sleeve shirt. Maybe we should start a Summer 2024 thread.

The surrealism of everyday life
Wilfrid replied to StephanieL's topic in What's that got to do with anything?
Somehow my physiotherapist got into the subject of enjoying ethics classes at college. Next thing, I am explaining the problems with mind-body identity to her. Little did she know. (This is the part of the session where I lie still and let her dig into my tissue; small talk required.) -
I am on a charmed streak with restaurant meals in New York City. Francie twice, Cafe Carmellini. It’s not usually like this (it’s usually like something I could have cooked better at home, hello chewy duck). I am overdue for a return to Foxface, but where else should I go? Based on a lunch earlier this year, the answer might be Le CouCou.
