We saw Bruce last week at UBS. Granted he doesn't move around the stage like he used to, but it was a great show. I think the version of The Ghost of Tom Joad that he did with Tom Morello was absolutely incredible. This is the first show I've been to at UBS (I've been to a lot of hockey games) and the sound system is excellent. Reminded me of the days of seeing the Dead.

  1. I attended the 2026 edition of the Biennial earlier this week. They exhibited a combination of older works from their holdings - a stunning O'Keefe, Johns, Rauschenberg, Warhol, Hopper, etc. And also contemporary work which I thought was a mixed bag. There was several pieces related to the destruction of last year's Altedena fire. I'm always in awe when someone is able to turn something awful into beauty. As an aside, I attended with a friend from LA so it led to a long discussion about how many people she knows whose homes were destroyed and left with nothing.

I finally got around to Elena Ferrante's so-called Neapolitan novels. I've been dipping in and out for a while and will finish the fourth volume tonight.

I say "so-called" because (as the author herself has pointed out) this is simply one novel, published in four volumes because it's something like 1700 pages. In the original Italian, the novel is called L'amica geniale.

Wikipedia says: "The Neapolitan Novels, also known as the Neapolitan Quartet, are a four-part series of fiction..." What? I cynically wonder if this is a ruse by the English language publishers to encourage people to start with any volume, which would be a huge mistake.

Anway, I'd avoided these for a while because of my suspicion of anything that's really popular, but they are certainly highly readable. I did tire occasionally of the endless romantic flings with indistinguishable local boys (Rino and Nino and Marcello and Michele and so on...) but the main female characters are interesting. And to my surprise, the fourth volume is the best. Very long novels can exhaust themselves.

I read the first one and found it to be meh. So I never read the subsequent books. I think I'm the only one who felt that way.

  3. The store bought stuff is disgusting because of the fat they use. Kosher for passover mustard is imitation. And I've never never managed to make a mayo with out mustard that didn't break. So for the second year in a row I'm thrilled about the aioli.

  4. I absolutely loathe Passover. Every year starting 10 days before all of my discussions with friends focus on how we hate this holiday. The turnover is an absolute bitch. And despite all my lists and organization I'm constantly searching for utensils and kitchen items. And my kitchen wasn't ready until after 4 this afternoon when I really wanted to get started last night. Just kill me.

I'm hosting first night. 5 adults, 2 kids. Soup is cooling. Aioli is done (kosher for passover mayo is an abomination). Kid made almond flour brownies. And the orange's for Roden's Gateau L'orange should be beeping momentarily. Brisket needs to be made overnight in crock pot. And chicken needs to prepped.

  5. The frequency with which my kid tells me he needs my help to find something missing because "he looked REALLY, REALLY hard! All over the place" and then I find it within seconds is out of control. And in the process I often find things that no one has noticed missing - yet. My personal favorite is when I ask if he looked in a specific place, he says yes but it's not there but somehow it miraculously appears as soon as I walk over.

Heated Rivalry. If you've ever had access to Cinemax, it will not impress you. Needs more hockey, tbh, and I say this as someone who doesn't mind watching two pretty boys smash.

But are you coming to the cottage?

When I lived on Beacon St. in Boston, I hated when it snowed. If I parked on the street, the plows would just bury my car. I had a parking space in back of the building but it was the middle space. Invariably, the people on either side would clear the snow from their cars onto mine.

We initially were parked on the wrong side of the street which meant that the plows shoved all the snow against the car. I actually needed help from one of the guys who work in my building to dig me out.

  8. Just got back from skiing in Vermont with the kid. His winter break is in January. Now thinking of I'm going to take myself to LA to see the Islanders play both the Kings and the Ducks in March. As with much in my life, it will depend on the boy's hockey schedule. We're getting to tournament time.

  9. It's funny you think severe severe weather means transitioning to whisky from gin. To me it means moving from lighter single malts to the big bad boys from Islay with lots of smoke and peat. I traditionally make the gin to whisky transition in September.
