  1. Kid isn't sure what to make of Talking Heads - we listened to Stop Making Sense. I was surprised with how familiar he was with The Kinks. Listened to One for the Road. I forgot Paranoia isn't on it, which I love. But Superman is. Which is a great track.

And we listened to The Essential Bruce Springsteen. Opening track is Bruce's Blinded by the Light. @MitchW - he was really confused and decided he likes the Manfred Mann version better.

  2. I'm realizing that the real issue with streaming is that kids don't have a perspective on era of music. We were listening to the radio and Wham's Wake Me Up Before You GoGo came on and the kid exclaimed how much he loved the song and started singing along with it like it was new. Meanwhile, I had to tell him that it was released in the mid-80s.

    Love Midnight Oil.

I couldn't love Lola Young. If we're talking about CDs you own, hard to make suggestions. Except of course to buy Hinds CDs for future trips.

    Television?

I'm not crazy about Lola Young either. And while I like Midnight Oil, my preferred Australian band of that genre was Hunters and Collectors.

We ended up not listening to a lot of music over our 2 days of driving. Mostly talked. Which is actually the thing I love about road trips.

    Traffic School?

I think it will be a big fine. Although the cop said I might be able to convince the DA to lower the mileage if I write a note explaining my previously impeccable record.

In my defense, the stretch of road I was driving is great. Nicely paved, very little traffic, curvy - but not too curvy. It's fun to drive and I've driven it many, many times over the years. (Rte. 17 between Roscoe and Hancock). I know there are often cops near Monticello and further north need Windsor, but I've never seen them on this bit of road.

What about some Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo?

The boy has a particular loathing for Taylor Swift. He doesn't care for Olivia Rodrigo, but will tolerate it if he must.

I'm taking CDs and don't have anything very recent, so no Hinds. We've listened to a lot of Tom Petty this past year. Thinking Wilco. Possibly The Kinks, if I can find the CDs. Long car rides are great for introducing the classics.

  6. The boy and I are driving up to Toronto. Last time we did the drive we listened to Joe Jackson, Squeeze, Bad Religion, Elton John, Foo Fighters and The Band. Trying to decide what this trip's playlist should include.

    Thoughts?

Depressingly, I last saw The Who fifty years ago.

I was texting with my brother who was reminiscing about seeing them at both Forest Hills and the Fillmore. My first Who show was '89 at Giants Stadium. My parents didn't let me go to Shea in '82.

I'm sure he wears ear protection...headset or earplugs?

    Earplugs.

I have to say, the sound wasn't crazy. It's louder at Yankee Stadium.

We saw The Who last night at The Rock. And we took the boy to his first show - which he loved. Roger sounded great and was still able to hit the high notes on Love Reign O'er Me.

  7. Be patient.  We went through a period where the boy was really into Imagine Dragons and a lot of other top 40 stuff. And then he got into classic rock. Now he wakes up every morning to it and has been gorging on The Who since he came home from camp to prep for the show next week. I think his favorite song is a toss up between Pinball Wizard and Blinded By the Light.

  8. Bought a smoked whitefish last week so after purchasing potatoes and corn and a lot of herbs at the market I made smoked whitefish chowder.

Earlier in the week I stuffed a rainbow trout with lemon and onions and roasted. Served with some eggplant.
