Maybe it's a part of getting older. Recent death of a friend (only 40 years old). Another friend has terminal cancer, we try to reach out to her, but she is clearly sinking into depression. Another was recently diagnosed with MS. Then a friend of mine told me his best friend committed suicide, he was going through a mid-life crisis of sorts, but nobody expected he would kill himself. My dad has still not fully recovered from his surgeries and illness, he's still having trouble with basic stuff.

The other night, I was told about a couple who've been to The French Laundry 125 times. The only eatery that I could think of going to anywhere near that figure was In-N-Out. I'm probably not even close to 125 times though.

How has recovery been? I find that if I take too long a break from the gym post workout hangovers tend to be much harder on me. All I want to do is sleep.

There's a place on Virgil in between Silver Lake and K-Town that has live poultry. I think the one in downtown on Olympic or Washington is still open.

Someone brought us 20 pounds of chicken fat for rendering.

There are a few clusters of Filipino eateries in Los Angeles. A couple in Glendale and there's Filipinotown. Over the years, I've tried a few here and there, mostly fast food, deli, and buffet style places. Max's and another place in Glendale are the two sit-down restaurants that are the most consistently recommended. Any plans to to go either one, Simon?

Probably because they are more issue oriented than plot based. I don't remember anything about a single Fassbinder I saw and I've seen a lot of those too. Gee, I remember stuff about Fassbinder. The difficulty with him is remembering which parts go with which films, particularly in light of his frequent use of the same actors. And with both directors, it may have been some time since you viewed the pictures. It has been a very long time. Mostly I remember his visual style, now that I think about it.

Is Church and State good? At one point about half the kitchen staff (or so it seemed) were former students of his.

M.J., I have no reason to believe that you want to have a serious discussion with me beyond harassing me. As far as I'm concerned the discussion about profiling has been civilized on all sides. I have no desire to get blown up on a plane or anywhere else and I am actually not against criminal profiling to a certain extent.

It could have been the heavy drinking. the absinthe? again? Yeah, the entire foreign film sections at Video Active in Silver Lake and that other place on Vermont or Hilhurst (I think it shut down or moved) are big blurs. So, what do you think about Herzog?
