  1. one of the best shows i've ever seen was wilco in los angeles (at the el rey maybe?) right after being there came out. they pretty much tore it down and rebuilt it live as a loud, almost punk rock album. the whole show was an extended out of body experience.

  2. it was good. here's where we ate:

    state bird provisions
    yank sing
    copra
    del popolo
    city view
    606

dinner at copra was outstanding. perhaps the best indian meal i've ever had in the u.s and up there with the best in london. and we preferred city view's dim sum (and experience) to yank sing.

more detailed reviews of all the meals will start showing up on the blog next week.

Belated Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, 2024.

even as capricious/inexplicable as the hall of fame's choices over the years have been, that one is hard to fathom.

The woman in the red is Mary Sue Milliken

    ah yes.

i mostly remember that edition of top chef masters (was there another?) for suvir's extremely cringe-inducing exit from it.

  5. two out of four in that top chef masters photo have passed away untimely.

(well, i'm assuming the woman in the red top is still with us; des jardins is quoted in the obit.)

  6. my introduction to bob newhart was via newhart, which came to us in india in reruns when satellite tv arrived in the early 1990s. it was a patchy show (though with very strong moments). it wasn't until i arrived in the u.s a few years later and happened on nick at nite that i understood who bob newhart really was. the dick van dyke showthe bob newhart showthe mary tyler moore show*: nick at nite gave me such an idealized introduction to america.

*i always forget that the mary tyler moore show started before the bob newhart show.

I've been looking forward to your garden updates. How's it going this year?

it's going weirdly: we had a very rainy and grey second half of june/early july. we were also gone most of that time. the plants were suffering from too much water and not enough sun when we got back. they are even now generally all very under-developed relative to past years with more normal rain/sun balance. this week is the first of two with a lot of sun and heat and so i'm hoping things will bounce back. let's see--last year's garden was a dead loss (we were gone most of the summer and i'm not sure the person who was taking care of it had much time to pay attention to it) and it would be a bummer to have a second disappointing season in a row (though none of it would rise to the level of this thread, of course--does the new incarnation of the site have a gardening thread)?
