MitchW Posted March 7, 2024 Posted March 7, 2024 (edited) Found a chance to get myself into Le French Diner earlier this week and had a lovely dinner and some nice wines by the glass. (Significant Eater and I had tried to get in a week or two ago, but it was later in the week, and there was a wait, and...we didn't). Started with socca, nice and oily and salty (as it should be, imo). It's not conducive to taking great pictures, but what the hell... Then I moved on to a massive duck breast, with chicories and grapes... I asked for the breast to be cooked to medium, and was told that (and I'm paraphrasing here): "You shouldn't worry, we cook it properly." And they did - I ate the whole damn thing. Finished with dessert, cause why not? Edited March 7, 2024 by MitchW 2 Quote
voyager Posted March 7, 2024 Posted March 7, 2024 Lucky you! Was given the same line by a Paris waiter and then was served WAY overcooked rognons, aka inedible. Quote
small h Posted March 7, 2024 Posted March 7, 2024 I am still thinking of their oeufs mayo, months later. Quote
MitchW Posted March 7, 2024 Author Posted March 7, 2024 I almost ordered the oeufs mayo. But after reading this, I didn't...https://www.grubstreet.com/article/oeufs-mayo-nyc.html Quote
small h Posted March 7, 2024 Posted March 7, 2024 I was there in December, before the backlash! Quote
Sneakeater Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 It annoys me (you’ll be surprised to know) that that dish is being presented as some new discovery. Quote
Sneakeater Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 And isn’t the reason chefs love it the margin? Quote
small h Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 Be off with you, haters. Deviled eggs are always good. 1 Quote
voyager Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 (edited) Indeed. I'm always happy when someone takes a hackneyed classic and brings it up to date with fresh takes. FWIW, Le Voltaire, the very staid and expensive Paris "bistro" kept oeuf mayo at .90€on its menu until covid as a conceit/tip of hat to its history. Edited March 8, 2024 by voyager Quote
Sneakeater Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 (Although last night at Libertine I started with the chou farci. Just cuz I knew what it was.) Quote
