Kinda silly. Mostly no justification for why places dropped/shot up. Why is ABCv 35 spots better than last year? Doesn't say. Same with Le Coucou going up 30 spots.

Apparently his last meal at The Grill sucked, but it's still #55. Why is Le Rock 27 spots worse than last year? Because readers have emailed him and told him the service was bad, I guess? Doesn't seem like a super useful metric.

To my surprise, I've eaten at thirty-plus of those. Partly, I guess, because some have been around a while.

Or...you've been around a while?

In all seriousness, does anyone honestly think that after like his top 3 or 5 or 10, he can really rank the remaining 90 - 95 restaurants in any sort of order that matters?

No but it does make for lots of clicks!

I think regardless of the order it's a good list to have as it somewhat offsets the static nature of nyt stars. We did beat out Kafana, which as I told Vladimir makes me feel like a made man.

And btw we finally ate at Mắm yesterday and it was really good.

Are you gonna go cash-only now?

semma at #7, foxface at #81: this does not match our experience of the two restaurants on back-to-back nights last october, but let's face it, all rankings are silly*.

I suppose it's intended to be a ranking because it shows places climbing or dropping. But if so, it is indeed just silly. Maybe it's part of Pete's campaign to make stars and rankings look dumb.

though, you know, mt. everest isn't as big relative to its surrounding terrain as mt. kilimanjaro is relative to its surrounding terrain.

Of pointless lists that I have skimmed and ignored, this probably ranks near the middle top of the upper middle section of the relative best when factoring in multiple considerations of the very very best and minimizing the not as best.

More importantly, we are featured in a two page, small font, black and white article in the April edition of 月刊食堂 as one of two trendsetters in America 2024.
