joiei
From sixnewthings.com comes the information that Sprinkles Cupcakes (an Oprah favorite) is coming to Dallas. Baked-from-scratch daily, Sprinkles Cupcakes were even featured as one of Oprah Winfrey's favorite things ... you know those shows where everyone in the audience gets, like, a car. This time, they got cupcakes, too. Sales went berserk after that. Carrot. Ginger Lemon. Peanut Butter Chip. Coconut. The menu changes daily, there may be lines, but there will also always be milk. Sprinkles Cupcakes opens this month, 4020 Villanova Dr., Dallas I think I have a new reason to go down and check it out, that and the Matisse exhibit at the Nasher Sculpture Garden. Rebecca
So Sprinkles Cupcakes IN, Crispy Creme Donuts OUT. Carrot cake. Yum. Maybe they'll start passing them out on airplanes instead of the garbage too salty too spicy chips.

That sculpture garden is nice, very impressive.

Scott -- DFW
That sculpture garden is nice, very impressive. You ought to see the recent Dallas location of the Italian restaurant Nove (from the N9NE Steak House crew). Gives a whole new meaning to "sculpture garden." Scott -- DFW
I visited Sprinkles yesterday. The entire time I was there--a little under an hour--there were between 40 and 50 people in line. They only have one register, but a couple of helpers taking orders and filling boxes to help streamline the process. (Count heads and, until they become more efficient, expect a wait of about one minute per customer.) After the lengthy wait, I placed my order and paid ($3.25/cupcake). Betraying the chain's California roots, the cashier asked to see each customer's ID before accepting a credit card. There was also a tip jar at the register (for the cupcake boxers, I suppose). I went with four cupcakes--"black & white," red velvet, dark chocolate, and coconut. I was tempted to try one of the $2.50 dog cupcakes, but decided to see how the "human" ones were first. The cupcakes are modestly sized, but not tiny. The cross section is pictured primarily so you can see the thickness of the frosting, which ranged from 5/8" to 3/4", depending on the cupcake. On each of the cupcakes I had, the frosting was dense and very sweet. (Too sweet, in my opinion. I like sugar, but don't want to be clubbed over the head with it.) The "sprinkles" on the dark chocolate and black & white cupcakes didn't detract. But the crunchy fondant circles on the red velvet cupcake were a little annoying (though easily removed) and the shredded coconut on the coconut cupcake would've been much better had it been toasted instead of raw. The cake bases were uneven. The dark chocolate, black & white, and red velvet cupcakes were not very moist--bordering on dry. The coconut cupcake was a little better, but still far from remarkable. None were truly bad. They were just...ordinary. (As my wife put it, "They taste like what the mothers bring to play group.") Are they overpriced? Yeah, probably. But that's not really my complaint. They could charge two bucks for them or, heck, even seventy five cents. No price is low enough to make me want to eat a so-so cupcake. Scott
