MitchW
Yea, I guess the $29 hot dog wasn't enough to keep it afloat. Not even for a year.

Sneakeater
Let's face it: Modern Ashkenazi was never a proffer that was going to have a lot of traction.

Sneakeater
That's just silly. How much is the Saucisse Purée at Libertine? The "hot dog" at Mischa's -- really a nicely spiced veal-and-pork sausage -- was considerably bigger than Libertine's sausage, and not any worse as a sausage. Sneakeater
I guess as a marketing device it failed, because it was so easy to misunderstand. They should have put "hot dog" in scare quotes.
GerryOlds2TheReturnofGerry
I wonder if it would have done better in a different neighborhood / smaller space.
Sneakeater
I think everyone would have to agree it would have had a better shot than in the Brain Dead District (as well as having a better shot at finding a crowd that understands the value of a big housemade sausage that's whimsically denominated a "hot dog"). Anthony Bonner
he was betting that he could replicate empellon as a "realistic price point" finance entertaining spot. Food was too weird. He forgot Mexican isn't weird to people. He should have added another 10% Houston's to the mix (the place this replaced) and it would have worked. Maybe there were other factors besides nomenclature. Then again, I wouldn't pay $29 for a sausage on a bun. So, I am definitely not the target audience for either sausage. Maybe a little koji fermentation added to the language and triple the price to make it really irresistible to those tik tok reviewers and that would've saved the day. Sneakeater
Hey it's OK for you: Libertine's sausage comes on a purée.

Yeah, the factors were that Modern Ashkenazi is too weird a proffer, at least in a big hall in the VC/hedge fund district.

Or, there were other reasons. I didn't know it was Modern Ashkenazi and I still never wanted to go and never heard anyone mention it. Maybe at a time when people feel economic uncertainty and dining out is dwarfed by take out and delivery, there are other reasons. Maybe it needed Robert Sietsema to rave about that sausage dog. I think it's a way of saying if it had been different with different food and a different price point with different press coverage with a different concept or maybe a different name or with a different dish they chose to promote that had actually caught on, or a different pastry chef, or with a different soundtrack, different decor, different servers, different uniforms, a different name.....any number of potential different somethings. We don't really know. 7 minutes ago, Sneakeater said: There's no bun. Doesn't sound like a hot dog to me....
