maison rustique Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Had such a nice day yesterday that I knew it couldn't last. Discovered wet wall in my office in the Liberty house. Will call the roofer to come check it out as there is no plumbing in that area. I swear there are water demons in this place! 1 Quote
bloviatrix Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 Finding street parking is a nightmare. There are still mounds of snow everywhere and you can tell who hasn't moved from their space in 2 weeks. Quote
StephanieL Posted February 8 Posted February 8 We have someone to do the driveway, but after not raining for weeks we have several days' worth of rain predicted for the coming week, meaning that the actual work is going to have to be delayed. At least the railing part can be done now. Quote
small h Posted February 10 Posted February 10 I love my friends. Love, love, love them. But why would you show up to my house, hand me a container of supermarket hummus, and say "I know you make your own, but I brought some anyway." (In case you're wondering, my hummus is exemplary.) 1 Quote

If I parked on the street, the plows would just bury my car. I had a parking space in back of the building but it was the middle space. Invariably, the people on either side would clear the snow from their cars onto mine. Quote

I usually cook when I have people over, but I wasn't going to be schlepping around the shops at feels like -1 degrees. I planned pickup, but it was too cold for that too. So for the first time in years I had cooked food delivered (Dinosaur BBQ for the Super Bowl). I still had people ask me, did you make this? I told the truth. Quote

I managed to get my supplies on a day when it wasn't completely horrid (and being able to drive to Costco didn't hurt). I also bought roast beef (from Formaggio Essex) for the first time in my life, because H's friend was bringing kimmelweck rolls and au jus down from Buffalo. I let the guy behind me in line taste-test it since I don't eat meat. The beef on weck was a huge hit and all the sandwiches disappeared in minutes. Quote
Wilfrid Posted February 10 Posted February 10 Oh I must try that beef. I have been meaning to try the rosemary ham too. Quote
Wilfrid Posted February 10 Posted February 10 View across Central Park from cafe at the Guggenheim. This snow is well over a week old. This is unusual. Quote

We initially were parked on the wrong side of the street which meant that the plows shoved all the snow against the car. I actually needed help from one of the guys who work in my building to dig me out. 1 Quote
maison rustique Posted February 20 Posted February 20 Caesar Salads without anchovies. Bah! Why even call them Caesar Salad! Quote
maison rustique Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Not an annoyance for me, but just throwing out good wishes for the many of you in New York/the northeast. I hope you have power, are safe and warm. Quote
small h Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Thanks! We have heat and power and plenty of food. And also a bad chest cold. Whee! Quote
Wilfrid Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Wednesday will be two weeks of bad chest cold, but only the first week was really incapacitating. Quote
bloviatrix Posted February 24 Author Posted February 24 Just finished digging out the car because the kid has hockey practice tonight. I need a spa day. Quote
StephanieL Posted March 5 Posted March 5 Driveway is torn up, but they can't pour the concrete until Monday because there's a very damp patch that needs to fully dry out. The dampness probably comes from the gutter drainspout, but in going in the crawlspace our contractor discovered 3 types of mold. Plus the earthquake retrofit isn't fully up to snuff. The previous owner did a lot of DIY stuff himself. We knew that he wasn't as good as he thought he was, but we're discovering even more "fun" things. 1 Quote
small h Posted April 26 Posted April 26 I bought a bag of what I thought was pea shoots (I did not look closely) and it turned out to be either the worst arugula I've ever tasted, or weird-looking chicory. 1 Quote
Wilfrid Posted April 30 Posted April 30 This has happened with so many online purchases. The latest: I bought a ticket online for the Frick a couple of days ago -- since when my devices have been flooded with...invitations to buy a ticket to the Frick. This has become so predictable. Accurate but nevertheless dumb targeting. It would be more productive to show me a completely random ad rather than ad for something I have just bought. I am sure it will be alright when AI takes over, oh, it already has. 1 Quote
StephanieL Posted May 17 Posted May 17 Nearly $1500 pp to go round-trip between SFO and EWR for Thanksgiving. And that's regular (though not super-basic) Economy, not even Premium Economy. Quote
small h Posted May 18 Posted May 18 So you're saying I should wait to book T'giving in NOLA until the war is over. Quote
StephanieL Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Our society's big annual meeting is in NOLA in October. I keep joking that they're going to send us staff there by Greyhound. Quote

StephanieL Posted May 30 Posted May 30 In making a cake for a potluck, I accidentally put in double the amount of butter. Luckily, I noticed just before putting the cake in the oven, though the fix involving scraping the dough out of the pan and into the mixing bowl, and then doubling all of the other ingredients. So now I'll have 2 cakes. We'll see how they come out. 1 1 Quote
