Wilfrid
One of those damn days. I asked a company for some money they owe me. I had to fill out a Docusign form with my bank info (that they already have), now they want a bank statement or something similar to validate it. Walgreens called and texted to let me know my prescription is ready. It’s not the one I need. I had to call a city department about something. Their website gave me a number that turned out to be 311 and they were no help. A lifetime of googling later I found the right number. I spent another lifetime pulling together all the flight, hotel etc information for my daughter that I admit I helped book, but didn’t know I am now essentially a travel agent. Plus doing all the above while working for a living. And I still need to get a cupboard door fixed.
hollywood10
May as well slam the cupboard door a few times before you get it fixed.

I got home about 6.30 (NYC time), which is of course after midnight in Barcelona. It's the most difficult journey I've had since the 36 hour Nashville to New York trip several years ago. In each case, the cause was not weather or external circumstances but irreparably faulty aircraft. $650 dollars from the airline. What with that refund and the hotel, they flew me at a loss. StephanieL
Have had a new appearance of floaters in my left eye over the last few days. I'm already booked for an eye exam this Wednesday. Hope it's just an age thing and not some really bad retinal issue.
Wilfrid
Out running errands yesterday, I develop increasing discomfort in both feet. Doesn't feel like arthritis. I get home and sit down for half an hour, then head out again. After some more walking, I now have really bad pain. I walked about 5.5 miles in total.* That evening, a building party with the neighbors and I am having real trouble standing. Stairs are a problem and I'm not walking as much as shuffling. Start heavy ibuprofen regimen and by this morning, one foot is fine and the other is tolerable. Both fine now. From the main locus of the pain, I am suspecting metatarsalgia rather than plantar fasciitis. The upside is that, if it recurs, I have a good reason to go see my beloved foot doctor after the holidays. Bad reasons include, for example, I got something stuck in my foot again. *In November, I was walking 7 to 8 miles a day in Barcelona; tired and foot weary, but not this kind of problem.

No retinal detachments or anything like that--just a combination of age and high myopia. I guess this is reassuring, in that I don't need surgery, but it's now one more lovely aspect of getting older.

I made an appointment to see my beloved foot doctor on Friday and the foot problem immediately cleared up. I now have to decide whether to cancel or go see her anyway and ask about any preventive measures I can take (also, she is fun to see). So right after that, I develop pain in my left knee. Not disabling, but uncomfortable, especially when climbing stairs, and -- to my surprise -- unresponsive to Ibuprofen. I start worrying about some structural damage. Then I wake up with a painfully stiff neck. All the time, in the background, my mild but annoying shoulder impingement is there. Today, for the first time in over a week, all those pains have gone away. I am sitting here wondering, what's next? To quote Stephanie, " it's now one more lovely aspect of getting older."

Wilfrid
Actually, I have been taking consolation from the fact that none of these annoying aches and pains are actually life-threatening.

Wilfrid
My father had his first (of many) heart attacks in his early forties. My mother had cancer by fifty. I guess I'll take the sore knee and random arthritis flare-ups.

bloviatrix
Do you know how hard it is to find a kosher place to eat in Philadelphia after 8 pm? There's one place. Everything else closes at 8.

When my kosher-keeping grandparents found themselves in similar situations, they'd use the "don't ask, don't tell" workaround: go to an all-night diner and only order dairy.

My work around tends to be finding a sushi place and ordering sashimi. But the kid was coming off two hard-played hockey games and wanted something heavier. StephanieL
Found one place in the Bay Area that sells true finnan haddie (smoked haddock). Ordered it online yesterday to pick up at their warehouse today, with several e-mails confirming such. Arrived at the pickup location, and found out that a large account had been given every single package of finnan haddie, including the one I'd paid for. I don't know if this was a genuine mistake or a "placate-the-client" thing. At least the customer service rep was embarrassed, and gave me a refund plus a credit equal to the original price. Looks like cod is going into tomorrow's kedgeree.
voyager
Don't know why that finnan haddie or any smoked haddock is almost impossible to source here. Salt cod, easy, but not FH. Why?
Sneakeater
It's a sign of great immaturity how much pleasure I got out of replying to my fishmonger's suggestion that I buy some smoked cod when they didn't have smoked haddock for my Burns Supper with, "I'll just buy some fresh haddock and smoke it myself!" Wilfrid
Growing up, smoked haddock topped with an egg was a regular and unsurprising supper. Or the haddock diced into scrambled eggs. Different place. I can’t remember when I last ate it.
Wilfrid
Also, in the famous British fish’n’chips shops, haddock was always an alternative to cod. But I don’t know if they still exist.
