The raw shrimp and bitter melon salad I’m also very fond of but it’s admittedly not for everyone.

Thanks @MitchW and @SethG. I'd had my eye on that very salad as possible sustenance on a train trip yesterday. There's an entrance to the High Line just outside Moynihan Hall, and Chelsea Market is just a 20m minute walk each way. But they don't take online orders (that I can see), and the late afternoon clouds suddenly turned dark and ominous. So I walked the other way to the newish Chi on 9th and got their okra salad instead (and dumplings in chili oil).

This is good to know; we certainly don't get out to Elmhurst that often (one time was when I got my first Covid vax at Elmhurst General, and we brought home from Ayada), but I do remember enjoying Zaab Zaab. What else should be on our list. @SethG?

These days? Never had a bad meal at Saranrom. Not reinventing the wheel but everything is just bright & punchy.

Zaab Zaab I like some things about. His use of bitter herbs took me off guard in a good way. That homemade fish sauce should come with a side of Altoids.

Khao Kang / Khao Nom are typically solid choices, the latter especially if one likes sweets

Pata Paplean for a fun vibe and terrible sweet cocktails, noodles and some more adventurous fare.

Lamoon was the undisputed champ until the pandemic started, but sadly they’re gone now. Looking forward to the new concept they’re opening in the same space, though. I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t been to her Bushwick place (Mao Mao) yet, but one of these nights…

I think I had one of the hottest dishes I've ever had at Khao Kang.

Was it the yellow fish curry? That one is not fucking around.

If memory serves me correctly, yes!

the woman who served me that told me I probably couldn’t eat it and was polite about it when I bought a second plate of food.

I remember the cooks at Pam Real Time popping their head out of the kitchen to check if my own head's exploded already from their yellow fish kidney curry.

I'm pretty sure the same woman said the same thing to me.

That's something I have not tried (not the exploding head, but fish kidneys), at least not to my knowledge.

I loved that dish. But it took me three beers and close to an hour to finish it.

They are very popular in the South. And I will say for fast food, it's pretty tasty.

Odd timing to stumble across this for the first time - apparently Khao Kang has a cart in midtown? (45th St. between 5th & 6th)

Were we not fairly sated from lunch already (Cafe China) I might have grabbed a bite

I need actual numbers in order to fly into a rage.

Fly, fly!  (MP for the sturgeon / caviar dish was $225 for 30g, $295 for 50g.)

I can’t imagine how that “proffer” is viable. No matter how good, she has lost me at that price point. So her market is people who have silly money but who are actually interested in spending it on that kind of food? At a place that isn’t legendary?

Maybe I am missing something.

To be fair, those prices aren’t really any different than, say, Le Coucou. Or The Grill, or Il Gattopardo, or Nello… and they all still remain viable. I imagine it’s better food than at any of the latter three, too.

Perhaps they don't want to give it extra publicity, as it's hard to see what legal claim they would have.

well, there's the possibility of people thinking--as i did at first and second glance--that this is a le bernardin property.
