memesuze
Now that I have a few days left of my enforced sick leave, I can finally get around to d/l'g some podcast software - but since I don't want to use or have iTunes, I'm unsure what d/l'g tool I should use - right now, since I don't have my home box on 24/7, I'm thinking I don't need one that will d/l in the middle of the night. But who knows.... Any recommendations for some software that's relatively easy to use? nimiq or winamp or something else?

You can just right click on most of them and download the mp3 files and play on your Media Player. And then transfer to a an ipod-type thing or phone if you like. fentona
It's not exactly a podcast (rather, iTunes U) but David Blight of Yale's lectures on the Civil War are a great listen.
g.johnson
A History of the World in 100 Objects. More a history of what the Brits have pillaged from the rest of the world but fascinating for all that.

It's a fascinating idea for sure. But it seems a little too visual for a podcast. I've listened to one episode, which sounded as if it was the soundtrack to a TV program. I saw those, and they definitely improve the experience, but I typically listen to podcasts while on the train, walking around, etc., not at my computer. Still, that's just minor carping about what is a very interesting podcast.
Abbylovi
I've really been enjoying Marc Maron's WTF podcast. His shows are refreshingly free of the typical PR based guests and prattle. He doesn't book people who are just out promoting their book/movie, etc., who you are hearing everywhere. The interviews are truly substantive and filled with things you haven't heard. I'm listening to Mike White (Enlightened creator) and some great past shows are Louis CK (former best friends reconcile on the podcast) and Michael Keaton. I'm looking forward to the Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks interviews, I hear that they are terrific.
