Pingarina
Pity. Hope it's not a trend.
Ampelman
Had dinner here this evening with Ampelman. Eh. I'd been here a couple of times when it was Pampa, and my opinion on the current incarnation as La Rural is pretty similar -- decent but not really worth going out of one's way for. Server was indeed ditzy; when it was my turn to play the "which wines do you actually have?" game, she apologized for the non-updated list. "How about the tempranillo?" I asked. Not available. Given that the list is not very long, I asked her which wines were in fact there. She offered to tell me which ones weren't (it turned out the latter outnumbered the former), before offering Omni a "much better" Malbec -- not on the list and not previously mentioned -- than the alcohol bomb Omni unwittingly initially ordered. My pinot was fine. I thought the empanadas were the best part of the meal: crispy, tender, thin dough enclosing a moist and flavorful spinach and ricotta filling. Concur with Omni's assessment of meats -- just OK. Sweetbreads were definitely overcooked, and the blood sausage seemed underdone with the stuffing spilling out all over the serving-hibachi thingy when cut. Skirt was good; "short ribs" (if that's what they were) tasted bland to me. Garlic fries were very good. Salad was iceberg and tomatoes with bottled Italian dressing. Nice, big room that was practically empty when we arrived around 6:30 and maybe half-full when we left.

StephanieL
sounds like it's closing It's now the 2nd branch of Cafe Frida (the other one is on Columbus in the 70s). Curiously, even though the menu is totally Mexican, one of the entrees is "Parillada Rural": steak, chorizo, and many other meats. FWIW, the food at Cafe Frida is pretty decent, at least the fish tacos, chile relleno, and salsa sampler that we had.
