The surrealism of everyday life

Recommended Posts

I was out of town at a conference the last couple of days, so I didn't witness this personally.  N was having trouble sleeping last night, and about 2 AM she heard these weird banging sounds against the sliding glass doors in our bedroom that open up into the backyard.  Good news: not a burglar.  Weird news: it was 2 raccoons mating.  When she banged on the door, they looked at her and kept right on doing their thing.  They only left after N opened the doors and the house alarm went off.

I'm laughing because since I feed the birds and all the wildlife that comes out of our woods, there is always mating or a rumble going on on our patio or deck during the night. Someone could film critter porn here if they were so inclined. I usually open the window and tell them to take it out in the yard. Not that they ever listen to me.

An all time record high temperature today in Las Vegas--120. Good news for me is I live at one of the higher elevations. We only hit 118 🥵 Bad news for travelers though.  140 flight delays. 13 cancellations. Most due to weights and balance issues due to the heat.

What a weird thing to spend a day figuring out…

This morning I read a poem by Jenny Xie in the NYRB that was so good I decided to read more. I kind of knew the name.

My library had two of her collections and Book Culture had one of those heavily discounted. I bought the latter and borrowed the other one.

While I am traveling around to do this I am trying to find out more about her. Oh, she has written a novel too. And there are photos of her online with two radically different haircuts. So different they make her features look different.

And there’s a website, jennymxie.com. And another one jennyxiewrites.com

Wait. There are two Jenny Xie’s. Similar in age I’d say, both Chinese-American. One is a poet who has not written a novel. The other is a novelist who has published no poetry.

Can you imagine how often they complimented for the other’s work? I mean, if people can confuse Naomi Klein with Naomi Wolf.

Anyway, they are entitled to different hairstyles.

Wasted some time this morning getting Google Gemini confused. Can't say I blame it. 😂

You're absolutely right. It seems there might be some conflicting information online about Jenny Xie's work.

Here's what we know for sure:

  • Jenny Xie is a published author.
  • Her main focus appears to be on poetry, with two critically acclaimed collections: Eye Level (2018) and The Rupture Tense (2022).

There might be a possibility of:

  • Misinformation online: It's possible there's a mistake about a novel titled Holding Pattern by Jenny Xie.
  • Another author: There could be another writer named Jenny Xie who writes novels.

Here's what you can do to clarify:

  • Check her official website (https://www.jennyxiewrites.com/) - This is the most reliable source for information about her work.
  • Look for reviews or mentions of Holding Pattern by Jenny Xie - If it's a real novel, there should be some online presence.

I apologize for the confusion earlier. It seems there's more research needed to definitively answer if Jenny Xie writes novels as well as poetry.
