Orange County NY Farmers

Recommended Posts

The NY Daily News has an article today about a program which seeks to match new farmers with available land. The profiled farmer, Martin Rodriguez, works on his own farm near Pine Island NY and sells in NYC greenmarkets.

For anyone who's not familiar with the balck bottoms of Orange County, the soil is a deep ebony, almost black. Onions and other root crops predominate. Several local roadside stands sell 10# and 25# bags of onions and carrots pulled within the past day or two.

It's a nice Fall ride, most places sell apples and freshly pressed apple cider, and several offer viewings of the cider pressing process. Good, cheap pumpkins, too. Bobolink Farm is just a few minutes away, south on NY/NJ Highway 94.
