Great Summer Songs

Recommended Posts

william devaughn - be thankful for what you've got

diamond in the back

sunroof top

diggin' the scene with a gangster lean

Oh yeaaaaaaahhhhhh!

And I heartily second KRamsey's Talking Heads and reggae. I loves me some old-time rock steady in the summertime.

Fountains of Wayne - It Must Be Summer (actually, their entire ouevre is perfect for summer)

It must be summer

Cause the days are long

And I dial your number

But you’re gone, gone, gone

I’d set out searching

But the car won’t start

And it must be summer

Cause I’m falling apart

I try your sister

On the jersey shore

She said you might be stopping by

But she’s not sure

So I call your mother

On long island sound

She said it must be summer

Cause you’re never around

And the sun is beating me senseless

I feel defenseless like a dying lamb

I don’t want to lie by the oceanside

Don’t want to play in the sand

Can’t you understand?

Can’t you understand?

It must be summer

Cause the streets are bare

And i try your number

But you’re just not there

And the sun keeps shining

Til it’s dead and gone

And it must be summer

Cause I can’t go on

And the sun is beating me senseless

I feel defenseless like a dying lamb

I don’t want to lie by the oceanside

Don’t want to play in the sand

Can’t you understand?

Can’t you understand?

But what about the ultimate summer party person of all time, Jimmy Buffet. God, I remember when A1A came out, then he became famous.

*Brown Eyed Girl*

Hey, where did we go?

Days when the rains came

Down in a hollow

Playin' a new game

Laughin' and a runnin'

Skippin' and a jumpin'

In the misty mornin' fog

With our hearts a thumpin'

It was you, my brown eyed girl

You, my brown eyed girl

*Son of a Son of a Sailor*

But a son of a son, son of a son, son of a son of a sailor.

Son of a gun, load the last ton

One step ahead of the jailer

I'm just a son of a son, son of a son, son of a son of a sailor

The sea's in my veins, my tradition remains.

I'm just glad I don't live in a trailer

*Margaritaville*

Nibblin' on sponge cake,

watchin' the sun bake;

All of those tourists covered with oil.

Strummin' my six string on my front porch swing.

Smell those shrimp

They're beginnin' to boil.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,

Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.

Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,

But I know it's nobody's fault.

*No Plane on Sunday*

You can throw your luggage down

Lose your cool and stamp around

But there's nothin, nothin you can do

Wipe away your girlfriend's tears

Go to the bar and have some beers

There ain't no way the bird's gettin through

No plane on Sunday

Maybe be one come Monday

Just a hopeless situation

Make the best of it's all you can do

till they get through

*Smart Woman in a Real Short Skirt*

I'm looking for a smart woman

in a real short skirt

Smart woman who knows how to flirt

Smart woman got a mind of her own

Smart woman that'll take me home

Take me home

*Tin Cup Chalice*

I want to go back to the island,

Where the shrimp boats tie up to the pilin'.

Give me oysters and beer for dinner every day of the year,

And I'll feel fine, I'll feel fine.

There are just so many. But then again some of these might qualify for the 'Worst song' Thread.

Silly People.

Of course it's War - "Summer"

Ridin round town with all the windows down

Eight track playin all your favorite sounds

The rhythm of the bongos fill the park

The street musicians tryin to get a start

Cause it's summer

Summer time is here

Yes it's summer

My time of year

Arguably the greatest "seasonal" song of all time - Mongo Jerry's "In the Summertime" (when the weather is fine).

So true!

War's "Summer."

Alice Cooper: "School's Out."

Seals & Croft: "Summer Breeze."

Sly & The Family Stone: "Hot Fun In The Summertime."

Drifters: "Up on the Roof."

Most ingrained in my summertime cellular memory would have to be summer of 1974, when "Blackwater" dominated airwaves and conversations among high school kids my age. But it's not a summer song, just at its peak in August, 1974, when we watched the Nixons float away in their beautiful balloon helicopter.

Are lyrics de rigeur?

Dub music from the '70's...music by Augustus Pablo and Big Youth always evokes heat simmering off the asphalt.Stuff that DJ Afrika Bambatta did back then too...Planet Rock and Looking For That Perfect Beat were always playing on someone's boom box[remember them?]on a subway platform on the way to Coney Island.

Dub. I quite agree.

"Sunny Afternoon", by the way, is quite subversive - even a bit chilly if you listen to the words:

My girlfriends run off with my car,

And gone back to her ma and pa,

Telling tales of drunkenness and cruelty.

The way the music works against the lyrics is very smart.

It has the additional virtue of actually having been released in the summer. 1966 I think. I remember being pleasantly surprised at the bitterness of lyrics.

The Flying Neutrinos did a wonderful version of this. Click the song title on their song sample page.
