Stone
I leaned over on the edge of my porch to pull some weeds, and the end board fell off. Rotted. So I started pulling away rotted boards, and found many more. So I pulled the decking off. The stringers were a bit rotted. And today I put on a new floor. And tomorrow, I'll rebuild the bottom of that post.
SLBunge
Nice work. Are you going to replace the whole post or just pull the boards off the bottom section and then scab on a new section of post and replace the boards?
g.johnson
I'm sure you know what you're doing but... are you certain that this is simple decay and not something more sinisterly fungal?
Stone
For now, I'm just going to replace the bottom. It gets pretty involved at the top with some accents, so I'm going to wait. My problem is that there's a leak in the roof which is letting water come down into the post and causing my problem. My contractor looked at it and said it wasn't termites or a bad fungus, and the rot didn't extend too far. Most of the stringers are good hard wood. I added some 2x4s to the inside to give new support for nailing the flooring. Hopefully, if I fix the roof and it stays dry, I wont have a problem. At least not for 20 years or so.
