Sneakeater
I found Raymond Sokolov’s How to Cook very helpful. Cal Peternell’s 12 Recipes also.

mitchells
Not a cookbook but I've been watching several Masterclasses and I think even for a beginner, following along the Yotam Ottolenghi classes would be great for her. Healthy, quick and beautifully presented. He is an excellent communicator.
StephanieL
Honestly, America's Test Kitchen's book What Good Cooks Know. She'll get a grounding in technique and plenty of well-tested recipes. N just made the chocolate mousse from that book, and it was easy and delicious.

Diancecht
i’m gonna need to get rid of some nonfood books soon. there are a lot more than those shown here. i should have bought the 2nd printing of the joy of cooking when we were in nola a few years ago. still kicking myself about that one. StephanieL
When I was growing up, there was a couple in our temple where the husband was a very tall white guy and the wife was a very short Indian woman. She was one of the regular Torah readers on Shabbat and the high holidays. We'd thought she was a convert, but it turned out that her father was the chief rabbi (or another high-up rabbi) of the Mumbai Jewish community.
