joethefoodie
Fertilized eggs! Balut! (Which I think are traditionally those of ducks.) I once attended, and took pictures at, a balut eating contest. It was at the Hester Street Fair a half dozen or so years ago. It was fairly gross.
joethefoodie
Make that almost ten years ago! Time flies…

Like a cross between hard-boiled egg and duck pate, but with feathers. I first had balut at Tuk Tuk on First Avenue along with Cabrales and I bet that was more than ten years ago. ETA: Oh god, it was pre-Mouthfuls so more than 18 years ago. I need to stop asking myself those sorts of questions.
Wilfrid
No sooner do I note that Pete Wells is arguably the longest serving regular restaurant critic at the Times than I see Platty is hanging up his bib after 22 years at New York magazine.
Sneakeater
I'm a little disappointed that Tammie Techlemariam has been appointed Underground Gourmet at New York rather than Restaurant Reviewer. Are they even going to have one?

Sneakeater
The best food writer in New York, for sure.
rozrapp
I received an email announcing that E. Alex Jung will be the next writer of “The Year I Ate New York.” He’s been writing for the Vulture section. Knowing that Tammi’s year will be ending, he applied for the position. He says, “I am not a food writer, but I am a writer who loves to eat….” He mentions that installments will be bi-weekly because he’ll still be keeping his other job. sweatshorts
I read the first article of Tammie's successor (https://www.grubstreet.com/2023/01/martinis-and-fries-the-new-york-happy-meal.html), and...I miss Tammie.
small h
That is one of my favorite meals, but why is he having so much trouble finding a decent version? Just go to Boulton & Watt or wherever, you don't need to overthink this stuff.
Sneakeater
It's the Bruni Problem. Teclamariam has a background in beverage and food. This new guy is just a writer about some other subject who likes to go to restaurants. Why should you care what he thinks? He's not gonna teach you anything. An insult to food culture, an insult to restaurants, and an insult to readers.
splinky
Y'all are mean. He clearly misses his favorite restaurant and he used all of his SAT words, whether they fit or not. I hope people reading will realize what a treasure and talent Teclemariam is. I also wish people would learn to spell her name correctly.
Sneakeater
What's a vowel between friends?
Sneakeater
But you're right, the missing "h" is unforgivable.
