Sneakeater Posted August 30, 2023 Posted August 30, 2023 Apparently Naomi Wolf and Naomi Klein are two different people. 2 Quote
Sneakeater Posted August 30, 2023 Author Posted August 30, 2023 One of Schoenberg's music students at UCLA was Jackie Robinson. (Schoenberg would excuse him from class for baseball practice.) Quote

bloviatrix Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 (edited) How did I not know that Patrick Mahomes' dad pitched for the Mets and played in the '00 World Series before yesterday? Edited October 3, 2023 by bloviatrix Quote
Wilfrid Posted October 28, 2023 Posted October 28, 2023 Any New Yorkers here know Sylvan Terrace? I had never heard of it. Stumbled across it heading for the Morris-Jumel mansion; 12 blocks from me so I was overdue to visit. The Terrace, with its row houses, was one of several streets providing accommodation for people working at the mansion and the estate. Now practically a gated community with the (small) wood frame houses selling for a fortune. But visually striking: looks imported from another city. 1 Quote
StephanieL Posted October 28, 2023 Posted October 28, 2023 Yes. I visited there many years ago. Quote

Wilfrid Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 I have the landmarks of New York book and am looking it up. I am sure the residents don’t want tourists gawking at it. Quote
Wilfrid Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 It has certainly kept a low profile. No entry in my 1300 page Encyclopedia of New York City. It goes straight from Swope to Sylvia’s. In the landmarks book it’s listed as a historic district; map, no photo. I am feeling less bad about my ignorance. Quote
AaronS Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 (edited) I saw it in a listicle of every similar street in NYC that had some neat stuff in brooklyn I was unaware of. must have been on brownstoner. Edited October 29, 2023 by AaronS Quote

Sneakeater Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 I'd like to know more about Leonard Cohen, though. Quote
Wilfrid Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Yes, I saw that. And I have a really embarrassing one. For more than 30 years I have believed that Neneh Cherry was Don Cherry's daughter. Nope. She is African/Swedish, that part was correct, but Don Cherry was her stepfather. Quote
Sneakeater Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 It's very brave of you to admit that. Quote
Sneakeater Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 It's almost as shocking that she isn't Canadian. Quote
Sneakeater Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 (edited) But here: I'll admit this. There was a TV show -- one of those thieves-work-for-the-government premises exemplified by Modesty Blaise -- that was on for a minute or two a few decades ago called South Beach. I knew that the protagonist was played by the daughter of Jerry Butler of the Loving Spoonful. But it never occurred to me for a second that the guy who played her sidekick was the son of Don Cherry. (Of course I knew that their handler was played by a Famous Groupie.) Edited October 30, 2023 by Sneakeater Quote
Sneakeater Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 (edited) Yeah it was only later when he started releasing music that it became known he was Don Cherry's son. But in that show he was just some actor pretending to be Jamaican (little did I realize he was actually Swedish). Edited October 30, 2023 by Sneakeater Quote
Sneakeater Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 I'll bet a lot of people don't know Joel Kinnaman is Swedish. Quote
Sneakeater Posted November 8, 2023 Author Posted November 8, 2023 I just realized that Jane Wyatt and Jane Wyman are two different people. If either of them is still alive, maybe they could write a book. Quote
