hollywood
The kid wanted to see this, so.... Appears to be the first of a planned series, the origin of Astro Boy episode. It looks like Astro Boy will have to save the populace over and over. A lot of actors doing voice work here, but only Nathan Lane seems inspired, the rest (like Donald Sutherland and Nicholas Cage) seem like they are earning checks. The animation is good, but it ain't Pixar. This seems like it should be on DVD next week, if not before.
Sneakeater
I'm never gonna see it -- don't go messing with my childhood -- but its existence has inspired me to walk around singing the "Asro Boy" theme song constantly over the last week.

I don't recall a theme song in the film, but maybe I missed it. There was lots of noisy robot fighting though. There were references to Kant, Descartes and Da Vinci for no apparent reason. There were samplings from Asimov's laws of robotics which made sense in context.

hollywood
The theme song is definitely not in the picture.

Same here. I was AstroBoy as a kid. An orphan robot with superpowers? What could possibly be better? Don't mess with my AstroBoy! And I still sing the theme song every day when I take my morning shower.

Priscilla
Eschew all Astro Boy desecrations. Because as all the best people know there is only the One, and it had the theme song, which I also know by heart and NOT just because I have the 45 bought from the Helms Bakery truck driver but because it is ASTRO BOY. prasantrin
The writer/composer of the Astro Boy (aka "Atom Boy") theme song gave a lecture at the school I work at. He's quite a famous poet in Japan. It was fun (even though it was in Japanese and I could barely understand it), and we all sang the theme song together at the end (in Japanese which means I didn't get to sing it). And the Osamu Tezuka museum is just a hop away from my place. One day I'll make it there. I think it'll be more interesting than the movie (which just started playing in Japan last month--what's up with that? I think it might be gone already, too).
Sneakeater
It says on Wikipedia that the "Astro Boy" theme was an instrumental in Japan, and that it wasn't until the anime were licensed for translation and broadcast America that lyrics were added by the American version's producer. Is this another Wiki invention?

hollywood
As should be obvious, I am not acquainted with the earlier Astro Boy. In this version, a conflict is set up between the Surfacers (sort of dregs remaining on Earth (?) a la Blade Runner) and residents of the "floating" Metro City (such as Astro Boy, his dad, etc.) led by President Stone. A love interest is set up between a spunky Surfacer named Cora, a human voiced by Kristin Bell, and Astro Boy.
Sneakeater
1963 japanese opening intro 1LuEfv-K6rs Sure, but that's AFTER the US licensing began. Wikipedia says that the Japanese producers liked the American verison, with vocal overlay, so much that they commissioned a like version themselves. You'd have to get the Japanese intro from the 50s, before there was a US version.
