NYT rates Belgian / clone Golden Ales

Recommended Posts

NYT has a taste test of several Belgian style ales. I was surprised that Ommegang didn't place any ales in the winner's circle, and that New Belgium brewing (Fort Collins CO) didn't get any mentions. Both regularly win medals at the major beer festivals.

The article notes that some of the imports may not be as fresh as they should be. The Duvel was singled out as an example. In my own experience, I found the Duvel in Belgium, from the keg, to be much fresher tasting than the products I've found in the US.
